Brevard summer institute!

hi! i am new here but i saw that there are a lot of discussions on Brevard Music Center. i got accepted to the vocal program (both classical and musical theatre) and i was wondering if anybody had any experience/advice they’d like to share! also if anyone is going to be attending too (even instrumentalists… because i understand that all the high school programs happen concurrently!!) please comment down below and maybe we could be friends!
i am flying all the way from Singapore! i just turned 18 last october but i haven’t started college yet so i was only eligible for the high school program. the music summer camp scene is all so new to me because we don’t have these opportunities in my home country so i really don’t know what to expect! if any parents have any kids that attended brevard, please let me know how their experience was like! i fear i have been bothering the faculty too much with my emails… okay thank you!!!

Hello, my son went to Brevard last summer to play viola in the orchestral institute and will be attending again this summer. He had the most amazing experience. He made what I would predict will be lifelong friends! It was his first time away from home for more than a couple nights, and I could barely get him to talk to me on the phone because he was always busy in rehearsals, practicing, or having fun. The campus is beautiful. Good luck and congratulations!

thank you for replying! do you know how was the schedule was like? (how many classes were there/what kind, private lessons, concerts, free time?) if you don’t mind me asking, what was the living situation like? was he roomed with different instruments/majors or are they all the same? thank you again!

Hey there! Thanks for asking such great questions. I’m hoping we get some info.

My son is 16 and headed to Brevard for the first time this summer. He’s a horn player.

Congrats on being accepted and everything we’ve heard is very positive. So I’m optimistic about everyone’s experience.

Soon you should be receiving a sample schedule along with all the things you need to send in (forms, etc….) From what I remember what that although they had long rehearsals every day, they also had individual practice time every day, lesson with their chosen instructor, master classes, and free time. My son also did work study, I think he had to work a total of about 5-6 of the evening concerts, he was an usher. They sleep in air conditioned cabins. It was very barebones, but I really don’t think they were in the room much except for sleeping. If you really pick through the webpage, there is a photo of a bunk room. His cabin had 4 rooms and each room had 4 beds (Bunkbeds…) I have a few pictures from last year. I’ll post them. His roommates were all orchestra kids too, but diff instruments. I would guess that you will likely room with other students that are enrolled in the same program as you.
