I read that the English did not want to have their laws determined by unelected EU officials. Is that right? EU people couldn’t vote for EU leaders who determined policies that affected them?
Hmm. just because some of the people who wanted to exit are racists doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. That seems far too black and white. Shoot, I’m sure there are plenty of racist people who would enjoy the tasty Charles and Charles cab I’m drinking right now, but that doesn’t mean it’s a wine everyone should stay away from.
I admit full ignorance here, since I haven’t been paying attention, but what if? What if the UN made all the important decisions for us? What if we had no choices in our immigration policy, and anyone who was in the North, Central or South Americas could move on up (or down) here, and we’d just have to pay for everyone? How would we feel? Overtaxed, no control, overwhelmed, struggling? Certainly in the UK they have bent over backwards as far as benefits to immigrants, who often seem pretty ungrateful for the opportunity. I can see why people would be angry, when they are struggling themselves.
I think people who feel like there is no control, they are paying and other people are getting the benefits of their labor are responsible for Brexit,.Trump, Marie Le Pen.
Sometime when you go too far over the tipping point on one side, it massively springs over to the other side.
I wish I would have been paying attention to this, but that’s my five minute observation.
@nottelling Lol @ Lindsey Lohan tweets. Thanks.
I meant political uncertainty. The markets uncertainty always follows. Just you wait until November… Sigh.
It’s another example of the tribalism which seems to be infecting the whole world.
TatinG, there were EU polling places in Britain, and they regularly had the opportunity to vote for representatives to the EU.
I think that the “mess” this vote will create economically will guarantee H Clintons’ election in Nov.
Voters in the US will NOT want to suffer the financial consequences of stepping off the precipice, as Britain just did- voting for change because they were angry, without considering the short and long term consequences…
Ha! Checked my fav boutiques. The prices quoted in USD are the same as they were a week ago. No need to rush for the bargains, lol. I can keep my cash in its safe place - the pillow. Did I mention that that’s my attack cat’s favorite pillow? My shoe $$ are safe.
I’m confused. A few years ago wasn’t everyone shocked when Ireland voted to NOT join the EU? And then they voted again a bit later and did join?
Wasn’t that supposed to be the EU’s wakeup call to loosen the reigns of it’s centralism?
“I meant political uncertainty. The markets uncertainty always follows. Just you wait until November… Sigh.”
It is driving us crazy. We thought about selling a bunch today and decided just to sell a little. Everyone was so positive the Brexit wasn’t going to happen. We will probably lose a total crapload tomorrow, but then again, as long as we don’t sell, I guess it’s all PFM (pure …magic), so who cares.
I’m not going to worry about it, because standing outside our house, two massive eagles just flew right over our heads, soaring downwards. It was beautiful, and that’s what really matters.
Thank God our little doggies were safely inside!
BB, check again tomorrow morning.
The real question is what exchange rate you would get from MasterCard if you pay in pounds (which I think you pretty much should do anyway, this whole Brexit fiasco notwithstanding – when I charged my daughter’s fees, I always elected to pay in dollars rather than pounds, because the exchange rate from MasterCard was always better than the rate the payment processing website was offering).
I heard an interview on NPR a few days ago, with a pro-exit woman from the UK. She sounded intelligent and rational, and laid out logical sounding reasons – too much power in Belgium, felt she as a business woman could do better without the EU restraints and rules, etc. But when the interviewer pointed out that she would do worse on the world market without the bargaining power of the EU behind her, she launched into a rant about immigrants.
This has happened before, and is happening now in places other than the UK. Demagogues always have been, and always will be, adept at identifying people’s fears and pointing them toward a scapegoat, a scapegoat who, in reality, has nothing to do with their problems.
So glad DH is a real estate investing genius…no stock market damage for us. DH is our investor, and the only truly bad deals he has ever done was in the stock market. He admitted his weaknesses, knows his strengths, and we have never looked back.
Must admit, though, trying to sell our lake house with no success at present, so we shall see…of course, who could have predicted devastating wild fires that would obliterate entire neighborhoods and devastate the aesthetics of the areas remaining.
I need to educate myself more about this specific issue. What are the ensuing ramifications of this vote, etc.
Ah that’s too bad you can’t pay in pounds. Maybe you do need a shopping trip to London!

Just like the Nazis did in Germany in the early 1930’s…
Amesie, I am actually looking at some tickets now!
Maybe we can visit kiddo again in August for some wine tasting and make a stop in Germany or London.
Here is one example of the (admittedly somewhat fringe-y) pro-exit posters: (and article) http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2016/06/brexit-anti-immigration-ukip-poster-raises-questions-160621112722799.html
That’s the worst example, @menloparkmom, but yes. The bad economic news that the US is going to wake up to tomorrow is the answered prayer of a demagogue.
But is it racist and scapegoating to want to control your countries immigration policies? Is that the same thing as rounding up millions of people and executing them?
