Interesting choice of stories to cover for his return…

Good. I like Brian Williams.

I always liked Brian Williams and watched his show on MSNBC before he moved to nightly news.

ANYONE WHO TRIES TO TURN THIS INTO A POLITICAL DISCUSSION WILL BE GIVEN A STRICT WARNING - IF OTHER MEMBERS SEE THIS ATTEMPT, REPORT IT TO THE MODERATORS, DO NOT RESPOND TO THE POST.

I had to laugh when I turned on the coverage of the papal visit today and found Brian doing junior reporter duty. Maybe they’re hoping some of the holiness will rub off? I think he’s just embarrassing himself by clinging to TV news. He should have the good grace to retire, write his (real) memoirs, teach, whatever.

The tweets on Mediaite are hysterical.

You’re right harvestMoon. They are a riot.

Why so harsh? There are many people in a more influential position who would be given an opportunity to be “born again” and many still “love” them. Why is a “mere reporter” totally denied such an opportunity after he has made a mistake?!

Should any person older than a middle or high school kid never be given a second chance once he has made a mistake?

(I admit I am somewhat biased here.)

Is it really considered a mistake? Or was it a lie?

It was announced he was returning to MSNBC a few months ago. The only question was whether he’d just be having his own show (I think at 10 pm) or doing general reporting. I wouldn’t have cared if he returned to the nightly news, I like him.

Thank God!! The media was getting critically low on lying, egotistical, self-absorbed, pretentious, attention-loving whores spewing whatever flavor of “spin” they prefer. The sun is shining just a little brighter now that he’s back.

Pffft. :-@

Wow. Don’t think you made it clear what you think of him. Can you clarify?? :open_mouth:

I like him too and would not have had a problem if he had returned to the nightly news. He got his punishment and so be it.

I like Lester Holt better. No drama, no ego. Works for me. I really just want someone to read me the news.

Lotta egos in the media these days.

@jym626 … That was precisely my point. Regardless of what one’s political slant is, I can’t stand to watch any of the “news” programs anymore. It used to be important to report the news without interjecting personal/political ideology, but those days are LOOOONG gone.

Brian Williams’ blatant fabrication of the facts surrounding more than one story just makes his idiocy worse in my mind than some of the others. But pick a network, pick a talking head…they’re all the same in my world. Useless gasbags wasting good oxygen…but I haven’t had my Diet Mt Dew yet this morning so maybe I’m overly irritable. :^o %-(

Wolverine,
I got it. I was kidding with you

What really irritates me is that they invite some really interesting person on to be interviewed or sit on a panel, and then proceed to talk over that person and the invited guest cannot get a word in edgewise. Newscasters now believe the news is about them and their view of the world.

The two that I really cannot stomach are Mica and Joe - just a lot of grandstanding.

Mika and Joe host what is essentially an entertainment show, not a news report, and including their political opinions and ramping up the drama --grandstanding, if you will–is part of the format. Brian Williams anchored a serious nightly news show on a major network, an heir to greats like Cronkite and Huntley-Brinkley, and he broke trust with the viewers. If an anchor can’t be seen as truthful, he has no business in that chair. I think it’s ridiculous for him to be back doing a “here comes the Pope; there goes the Pope” function. That he would even want to take on that role shows that his desire for exposure and fame still outstrips his good sense. Go away, Brian–we’re just not that into you.

I think people like both Holt and Williams because they deliver the news in a straight forward way without exaggerating the tone of their voice or telling the listening what they will or won’t be interested in. They don’t need to say “You’ve got to hear this” and they don’t become breathless at the end of each sentence to exaggerate the importance of what they are saying.

I can’t even watch Robin Mead or any of those Disney-like characters who seem giddy and stupid. Their style is to start each sentence slowly and pick up the pace until they are almost breathless at the end. (Their faked enthusiasm for what they are saying is sickening). And, to make matters worse, they exaggerate certain words within their “runs” I guess to let the viewer know which words are most critical. I don’t know. But, I can figure out what I have to hear and what I will and won’t believe and I can distinguish the essential form the unessential parts of a sentence. So please, modulate; Just deliver the information in a straight forward manner-like Holt and Williams.

Thank goodness there are now two who don’t insult the viewers’ intellect. What Williams did was unfortunate and normally it would be enough for me to avoid listening to him. But with so few people I can stand listening to, I have to forgive him and trust he will be more honest in the future.
