I personally like him and watch the NBC evening news most nights. But it’s tough to say if he will survive this scandal - whether you consider it exaggeration or outright deliberate lying.
He just announced he is stepping aside for a few days.

Maybe Saturday night live will make room for another white guy.
I’m sure he’ll land on his feet. We have a pretty short memory and he seems pretty flexible.
No.
I’m sorry he got himself into this, he seems like such a nice and funny guy. Less painful if he was a jerk. But I’ll bet he gets out of journalism, and goes into politics. Just watch! Then this won’t hurt him a bit.
He should not survive it.
It’s always a disappointment when some public figure we like makes bad choices. Think of some media figure you don’t approve of and imagine them in the same situation. Ethical standards should apply to everyone.
Although I suspect he’ll manage to land on his feet somehow.
No, he is a goner as it should be and I for one am not at all surprised by anything except how the heck he thought no-one would speak up. He truly seems not to have noticed the other people involved in the events he exaggerated were real. Instead, it’s as though he imagined they were just props in his world. So cocky. omg.
Since NBC news sort of pretends to take credibility seriously, maybe not. Do I care about this nonsense? No. He didn’t get a medal. He just made up a story.
Hillary “remembered” a whole drama about being under fire that never happened and she was forgiven.
I’m sad that he did this. I like him and I think he’s one of the best talking heads I can recall. I don’t see how he can regain his credibility. It makes me wonder about the psychology of people who commit professional suicide. He’s been repeating this lie for years though. I’m surprised it took this long for someone to call him on it.
Who does NBC have to replace him? Maybe Lester Holt? I wasn’t a fan of the guy they fired from Meet The Press. I’ve already forgotten his name.
I think that’s because she didn’t keep on talking about it over the years.
I don’t have any opinion of him, so I don’t care if he remains. But memory is a strange and funny thing. I don’t think he was lying, or fabricating. I think he misremembered. If it were my choice, I’d keep him on.
I agree with CF.
We don’t actually remember events. We remember remembering them and so on. Our memories are REMARKABLY inconsistent. When they’re traumatic, they’re even worse.
I personally think that he truly believed that’s what happened.
Well, he may actually think he was in a chopper that took RPG fire and a body floated by his hotel during Katrina but if so that does not help him all that much in the area of credibility. Lester Holt is the immediate replacement. There are mentions of a Katie Couric return to NBC. I doubt he will be back in the anchor chair anytime soon.
I think it’ll be forgiven and forgotten. Worse scandals have surfaced before and a single mistake or instance of misremembrance like this probably won’t damage his career so much that he’s finished for good. If it’s an outright lie, then he deserves the flak he gets, but if it was a mistake, it’s understandable and will eventually be overlooked.
What he did is just an extension of what all anchors seem to do today - make the news about themselves. I am so sick of seeing very interesting people invited to be on a panel and then have to listen to the anchor or other newsperson dominate the conversation. The guests hardly get a word in edgewise. I thought an anchor was supposed to report the news or facilitate the conversation with a guest whom the public has an interest in hearing. Seems to me they ALL want to be the main event. Personally, I do not find any of them all that interesting.
I don’t think he was being purposefully deceitful so I’d give him a pass but tell him to stick to the script and keep him on a short leash.
He’ll survive this. People’s memories are short. He’ll get ragged on the talk shows and he’ll be a good sport about it. Rob Lowe and Hugh Grant’s career’s survived their scandals. Will anxiously await a moment with Brian Williams and Jimmy Fallon akin to the Hugh Grant/Jay Leno priceless moment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrJ2jc6qfzA
I don’t know. But I’ve always had a great deal respect for his work and it’s difficult for me to even read about his troubles now. I really hope that he can survive it.
According to the soldiers who were there:
Somehow, I think I would remember actually being in a helicopter that was fired upon and crash landed, rather than landing 30 minutes later and being told about it.
