My son will be doing an internship this summer and he should probably have something other than his school backpack to carry things to and from work. He’s 21 and it will be an office setting. What do kids carry these days?

As a long out of school professional, I’d say that a messenger bag is the way to go. After carrying a briefcase for almost 30 years, I switched to a messenger bag 5 years ago. I work in NYC and see many more messenger bags than briefcases these days.

But depending on the location and the industry in which he’s interning, a clean unobtrusive backpack wouldn’t be out of place for a summer intern.

I think for a summer intern a backpack is fine.
My S loved his briefcase which he purchased just before he graduated college. He used it daily for his first two post grad jobs. With one of those jobs he used his own laptop and something to carry it was important. He also used it when looking for work to carry his resume and an ipad which he used to show his portfolio. He is now on his third job post grad and he no longer uses his briefcase. (it is sitting in his bedroom closet at my house)
I think many males are happy with whatever you or someone else purchases for them.
I just looked at my S’s bag. It is a bit of a cross between briefcase and messenger bag. Similar to this

I use a soft briefcase from Brooklyn Industries that I like a lot. They also have messenger bags.

I have used a briefcase for years which I hate. H just bought me a backpack for my laptop which will be big enough to safely hold my laptop and other stuff (work papers, lunch, etc) I need to lug back and forth to work. The backpack will free up my hands and be more comfortable to carry. And I can use it as my second carryon/purse when I travel for work. For years I have used a briefcase or laptop bag because I felt it looked better than a backpack. I am now at an age where I want convenience and comfort. I did consider a messenger bag but really think the backpack beats it for ease of use.

I used to use a briefcase but got briefcase elbow.

I add my vote for a messenger bag. My 21year old takes his to class, to internships, and as his airplane carry on. They are available in a variety of materials, styles and price points. For maximum utility choose one that will accommodate his laptop. On sites like ebags there is a sorting function for type of laptop you want to carry.
The hands free aspect (vs regular briefcase) is very handy when using public transportation or “walking while texting” .

A slim nylon dark messenger bag with a wide strap that looks generic.
You don’t want to become a mugging victim by carrying a pricey bag.
Zappos has a variety of prices, styles, and colors.
Dakine, Tumi, Jack Spade, Timbuk2, Patagonia

My son used a backpack through college and law school, but switched to a messenger bag when he started working for a tech firm. He just upgraded to a good leather one, after carrying a canvas Target bag. He said it looks better to meet with clients. If he’s in a tech type internship. or one with young people, the messenger bag is the way to go. His is a good leather bag, bought on sale, but very simple, low key. My other son, he’s a practicing attorney, carries a briefcase but only when he goes to court or outside of the office. For office days, just a small case for his laptop or tablet.

dmd - I love it, but out of my price range. :(

Levengers has a messenger bag, one holding laptop and slightly smaller one. We chose the bomber leather.

their products may seem expensive, but last for years.

My son asked for a messenger bag as a graduation present. We bought a canvas sling bag at the Eddie Bauer website.

A lot of the young professionals at our office carry backpacks. Most people carry a messenger bag.

Backpacks and messenger bags are pretty common in offices around here (computer companies). So are laptop computer bags, although those may attract robbers more.
