Brief survey of calc vs. Calculus I

So I took the Math placement exam and I got placed for Brief Survey of Calculus I. I kind of took the test in a hurry but I’m alright with my score, although I need calculus for medical school so does it matter if I take Brief survey or should I retake the test and see if I can place into Calculus I? I understand I should talk with my advisor about this, but I wanted input before orientation. Thanks!

Take a look at this link about pre-med Math requirement.

What is your intended major? If your major does not require M211, it is safe to take M119. I really do not see M211 as a pre-requisite for any science courses except for PHYS- P221. But, you can take P201. Others please correct me if I missed something here.

Oh sorry, my major is Neuroscience which says I can take M119 and M120 as opposed to M211, but I wasn’t sure what medical schools wanted. The website says schools require M211?

But I wasn’t sure if two semesters of Brief Survey of Calc fulfills the requirement for Calc 1 for medical school though.

Biology department does not require M211 either. Most med schools require one year of college “Math” (not calculus) which includes statistics. The bullet proof choice is to take M211 and a statistics course to cover 100%. However, M211 is not easy. Pre-meds have to protect their GPA. You should take M119 and evaluate the risk going for M211. You could check with IU pre-health office to confirm.

This is kind similar to the English requirement. Most medical schools require 1 yr of English. But, most of them will accept W131+an intensity writing course (not from science department) instead of a second English course.

Yea math is not my strongest subject, which is why I was okay with brief survey but I didn’t want to risk it for medical school. Do you think IU would let me take M119 and then Calc I later on if needed? It says I can’t credit for both but idk what else I would do if med. schools won’t accept brief survey. I’ll contact the pre-health office. Thanks!
