<p>I would like to buy my son either a briefcase or messenger bag for an internship. He is a college student, but will need something other than a backpack. It needs to be durable, and at least something water resistant would be best (he will using public transit, so he will be walking outside with this quite a bit). <p>Timbuk2 makes great bags. They sell them in luggage/sporting goods stores. I see the younger professionals carrying them - usually in black, although they come in many colors. I have carried mine (two shades of blue) for four years, usually very full, and it still looks brand new! They have several styles and are made in San Francisco. Timbuk2 dot com.</p>

<p>I have an STM case for my iPad. I like it, but it is getting a little worn already.
Leather can last longer than nylon, but a lot heavier.
Good leather can improve with age, but thin leather can look really tacky.
Nylon/synthetic isn’t going to be quite as sexy, but there are more options for pockets- etc.
Well made nylon can look very professional.
I also have a Tom Bihn bag for my iPad. I really like the extra pockets you clip in. Makes it easy to find things.
