Pretty cool how a small school can thoroughly thrash academic royalty like Cornell, Michigan, U of Rochester, Colgate, etc, with a second place finish behind NYU.
I would not use this result to say that schools were “trashed”. We don’t know who the schools sent to represent them at this meet, if the larger schools have multiple debate type teams (other than mock trial) so their talent could be spread out among multiple debating organizations, and it should be noted that some of the larger school split into two teams. As one example, Cornell has an extremely highly ranked Speech and Debate team in addition to their Mock Trial A, B an C level teams. It is impossible to know which Cornell team showed up for this particular meet.
More importantly, I think it would be more fitting it to use these results to recognize that there are smart kids at most every school. Certainly that is true and certainly that should be applauded. But that point can be made without negativity by using the word “trashed”. Displaying graciousness in victory is (at least) as important as displaying graciousness in defeat.
