Bringing a canoe to college?

I will be a freshman and I was wondering if I should bring a canoe to college? I would like to take advantage of the nearby streams and lakes, so I need to bring my 14 foot canoe, but my dorm room is only 14x10. I do have a balcony. Do you think I can stick my canoe on the balcony and take it down when I need to use it? I hope it doesn’t bother my roommate.

I assume you would have a way of transporting it from your balcony to the nearby stream or lake…like a trailer hitch on your car or whatever you need to get it to the water. I doubt the school would permit a canoe to be on the balcony for safety/fire code reasons. Besides, wouldn’t it take more than one person to get it off the balcony and to load it on the car? Can’t you rent a canoe when you want to use one since you will have a car (I presume) that would have carried the canoe anyway.

Ask the school if they have any place for you to keep it so it is not on the balcony and possibly it would be easier to load onto a car.

one of my roommates built a boat in our apartment this year. it was a one sheet skiff. [The One Sheet Skiff](http://www3.sympatico.ca/herbert.mcleod/skiff.htm)

our apartment was much bigger than 14x10. we either kept the boat in the living room or the basement. since your living in the dorms i really wouldn’t bring it. our apartment was off campus.

With that little storage space, it would be hard to see anything bigger than a small inflatable boat in your dorm room. Even those very small whitewater kayaks might not be easy to fit in a small dorm room.

The best solution might be to rent off-campus storage space for your canoe, or else to rent a canoe.

Or see if there is a paddling club with club boats.

Is the balcony all yours or for meant to be used by both you and your roommate? What is the balcony meant to be used for? If you could somehow fit the canoe into what would be considered “your space” I guess this could work … but given how small a typical double is I can’t imagine fitting a canoe in a room along with your other stuff without seriously intruding into your roommate’s space.
