Bringing a gift to an admitted students' reception?

I was wondering whether it’s necessary or appropriate to bring something–a small gift, like a box of chocolates–to a local admitted students’ reception held at an alumna’s house. My mom insists that it is, since the reception will be held at someone’s house, but does the rule apply to college-related things? What do you guys think?

( Thanks! :] )

I don’t think that it is necessary

No. No one at any college reception I went to did that. You could bring a thank-you card though.

No. That’s awkward.

I’ve never even heard of anyone bringing a card. Thought they were for sending, at least since the 1800s. Anyway, neither is necessary or even advisable. Just go and have fun and be happy.

Not necessary and maybe even weird.
