Broad School of Business Michigan State

Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into the Broad School of Business as a “Standard” admit as a Sophomore? Our S26 is borderline for his “Direct” admit stats. Thanks

I assume you’ve seen this.

If you’re like - I get that but how hard is it - you might get with an adviser and have a chat.

There are plenty of direct admits he can no doubt go to - if you want to take the risk off the table.

Secondary Admission - MSU Broad College of Business

Thanks. He has a couple that he’s a lock for direct admission. If he doesn’t get directly into Broad, he will probably not, as you said, take the risk and go where he’s a lock. At a school like Iowa, it seems secondary admission is almost guaranteed at a relatively low criterion. MSU seems to be much more of a competive situation.

Or how about schools without secondary admission altogether - lots don’t have it at all.

Broad is good - renowned for supply chain although honestly i think all schools do well in that. Not sure his major.

In looking at the link I sent you, the requirements were dizzying.

Has Broad published direct admit statistics? My S24 ended up being a direct admit, but Broad made the direct admit decision so late in the spring he had already fallen in love with another school he received direct admit to in the fall.

He also has Kansas, where he’s an automatic admit because of his GPA and SAT scores. That’s a bird in the hand. He also has three others, for whom there is no separate business admission, so once he gets all his decisions, we will decide from there—just trying to get his ducks in a row.

From what I can tell he will be at the bottom of the range for Broad. We will just have to wait and see at this point.

Is it his top choice ? Are you in-state ?

I haven’t seen Broad direct admit stats, or what proportion of the class they fill w/ direct admit (the Broad direct and secondary processes in their current forms are relatively new, within the last five years.) Students do need a 3.5 HS GPA to qualify for direct admit (based on how MSU recalculates GPA, methodology is unaddressed on the website AFAIK.)

Even if one gains direct admit, make sure your S understands the requirements to stay in Broad and move to a major (everyone starts as pre-business, even though the applicant chooses a major when applying.):

The secondary pathway link that tsbna shared has a presentation which your S should look at every slide. Here are the secondary admit stats admissions recently shared, note they don’t match the FAQ admit rate question which says 34%-54%. I assume the ppt is more current. Slides after this one detail each admission factor and how the scoring works.

Here’s the Broad direct admit thread from last year, with some good intel:

We’re in New Jersey, and he’s not looking in-state. MSU is one of his top schools. A lot of kids from our area are choosing more Southern schools, but his list is Midwest. Most likely, if he doesn’t get directly into Broad, he will go where b-school is definite. He also likes UVM and really likes UNH. Somehow, I can see him ending up there. Almost all his apps are in, so now it’s wait for decisions and go from there.

Thanks. It seems like Broad is a tough admit through standard admission.

Agreed.

Good luck to your S, sounds like he will have some great choices!

Where did your son end up if you don’t mind sharing?

My son was a recruited athlete who went to a LAC without business (and he really wanted to study business.) Long story, but his sport didn’t work out so he transferred to the business school at U Delaware and has been very happy there.

We love Delaware! My wife went to their B-School and our niece just graduated from there.
