Brooklyn BA/MD Program with SUNY Downstate

As someone on the verge of graduating from Downstate, I have to disagree with the above poster. You should be excited to be in the BA/MD program. Congratulations!

Downstate gives you unparalleled clinical exposure in an underserved urban community. You will be very well prepared for residency compared to some of your more pampered graduates of private schools (and at roughly half the tuition). Downstate produces a huge amount of physicians who practice in New York, so if you plan to stay in NY, downstate is a good place to start off.

You should ask others, particularly those who actually attend school here. You’ll be able to tell by talking to them if it is right for you. I personally would not have traded it. Sure there’s room for improvement, but that’s always true.

Congrats again, just be sure you really want to be a doctor. I don’t quite know how you can know that so young, but to each his own. Don’t be afraid to take time off to round out your experience and your knowledge before you commit to a life of medicine. Remember it’s not a race… After all, think about what the finish line is… Don’t be in a hurry to get there.

Enjoy the journey.
