There is a Brown Parents page on FB that is super helpful. I have a move in primer doc parents of 2025 and I put together. There will also be a Class of 2028 page that someone will naturally create. People are really helpful there. We are from the West Coast and we have managed just fine!!

One other thing. Move in day is usually Wed-Sat before Labor Day weekend so book your hotel asap. Convocation is the Tuesday or so after Labor Day. We didn’t attend due to COVID restrictions. It’s broadcasted and you can also watch on YouTube. Tuition for first semester is due around 8/1. Roommate survey will be sent out around that time or before and they use that to assign roommates. Start checking your email with the assigned Brown email. Breathe. You got this!

ED deferred → rejected but i’ve moved on!

With those nosebleed stats, it must be her essays, the next filter after academics. I can’t think of any other reason. If she decides to transfer out of UW, she can re-apply. I’d suggest spending 3 months (few/several hours/week) to create a solid main essay.

And check the college’s ā€œcommon data setā€ to see what each college seeks in their admissions evaluation. They all seek different things. Hence why some are getting admitted / rejected from opposite schools as their friends and admissions decisions aren’t making sense.

Waitlisted… how does Brown handle waitlists? when do they start admitting from waitlist? how realistic is it?

I don’t think it was the essay but who knows. She is an excellent writer and spent a lot of time on it and I thought it was amazing. We also hired an experienced college counselor for the whole process and separate essay coach to help make sure it was top notch.

I think in the end, high stats really get you nowhere for these schools. She’s a smart, kind, high achieving regular kid but I’m sure in the sea of applicants looked like all the rest with nothing in particular to make her stand out.

I did peak at her portal last night and rejected from Brown as expected. Not planning to tell her unless she asks.

Yeah, the basic issue is they don’t need a specific reason to say no to each of the hordes of great kids they have no choice but to reject. They need specific reasons to say yes to the few they do accept, and they only say yes to so many kids for one reason or another.

So all you really know is they ran out of yes spots and did not have room to say yes to you too. And that is really it, nothing more profound.

DS was accepted last night. We are all so shocked. Brown was his shoot for the stars shot and the ideal way to follow his interests. We aren’t even looking at the financials this weekend. Just celebrating. I hope we can make it work.
