Brown Frequently Asked Questions

People seem to ask the same questions over and over again so here is our own little FAQ. Feel free to add appropriate information.

I’ll start.

1 Yes, we have grades. But you have can take any class pass/fail.

2 Even if Brown doesn’t calculate it’s own GPA, grades are just as important here as at any other school. This is because you show grades to employers/grad school, not Brown itself - just like at any other school

Caveat to number 2-- after you get your first job (or go to grad school) no one cares what your grades were no matter where you went.

3 Yes, the Open Curriculum is real. You can take any class you want so long as you pass 30 and complete a concentration.

4 If you have a question about housing or meal plans you can use the internet and find it easily on your own. Telephones work well to supplement the internet. If you’re looking for personal opinions of students this is the place…if not…just call and ask.

5 Ivies do not give academic or athletic scholarships. It’s based on your family’s income.

6 Brown is not need-blind for international students. grr.

Does Brown allow counselors to call if you’re on the waitlist?

yes, mine did, that’s how I knew my chances were good

It would be best if you posted new ?'s elsewhere.

11. Hasn’t Brown developed a reputation (deserved or not) as the least rigorous of the Ivies because of its Open Curriculum and grading policy?

Sigh. This is the thread for posting the answers to frequently asked questions, NOT posting new questions or adding a question to the list without an appropriate answer.

Let’s try this again:

Not for the sake of encouraging:

11

[Open Curriculum Explained](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/385841-brown-curriculum-university-college-explained.html), and no, Brown has not had that reputation since the mid to late 80s. That was simply an initial feeling about the Open Curriculum because it was so new and radical that there was push back amongst elitist. It has long since proved itself and that sense that Brown is any less rigorous comes simply from artifacts of that initial push back, typically amongst high school students going to UChicago because they didn’t get into Brown. That last line was largely a joke, but has a hint of truth to it because these attacks typically do come from high school students who are going to attend places with rigorous cores and defend that decision by assuming that a rigorous core is necessary for a rigorous learning experience.

Can we please get rid of the CC rules on this list?

nay…

why nay? this is a FAQ, not a “please don’t annoy me on cc” list
