<p>Harvard’s website states that their acceptance rate was 9.0% for this year with a record of almost 22 900 applications for the year. Brown’s applications were more than 19 000 this year for a total acceptance of 1485 for a rate of 7.82%.!!</p>
<p>Some anecdotal evidence to support what MovieBuff indicated: my DD was accepted at HYPS, but wait-listed at Brown!</p>
<p>Isn’t the class size 1485? I assume Brown would accept more people than that under the assumption that some would choose to attend other schools.</p>

<p>The data is exactly the same that Harvard is using for their published 9.0% rate. Therefore it is safe to assume that the percentages of 9.0% for Harvard vs 7.82% for Brown can be compared.</p>

<p>i dont think brown took in ED for what they sent with their letter of acceptance. Penn is the same way - they say the the class size will be 2400. The total number of apps = 23000. so that means they must accept b/w 3500-4000 ppl to have a rate of around 20%</p>

<p>Movie, Brown accepts about 2700 for a class of 1485 (not everyone who gets in goes!). So that equates to about 13% give or take. Last year Brown accepted 13.7%, this year with applications up about 3.8% the overall rate will be a little over 13%.</p>
<p>Do you understand the concept of yield? You dont take class size/total applications instead you have to take the number accepted/total apps. Very different things.</p>
<p>It’s possible it’s lower or close, but Brown’s acceptance rate is not class size divided by number of apps. As others have said, due to yield, I think the typical “admit class” is like 2500 students to create a class of just less than 1500. This would mean 2500 or so divided by number of apps is the acceptance rate, that’s how everyone calculates it and so that’s how Harvard’s was calculated.</p>

<p>ok…so by your logic Penn would have an acceptance rate of about 10%…which is like half that of last years - a dramatic decrease from the norm. Same with brown, how are they gonna go from 15% to 7% acceptance rate in one year, think about it…you’re not being logical.</p>

<p>I totally understand the concept of yield, but the same applies to Harvard. Harvards numbers are also comparing class size and number of apps ( not number of accpetances…) Apples to apples. They did not release the other number, therefore that comparison is not possible …yet!!!</p>
