<p>I think at any top institution, GPA and rank (and course selection) will matter the most. Brown may not place as MUCH emphasis on raw scores, but don’t be fooled; they still matter a lot.</p>
<p>I wouldn’t say they emphasize one thing over the other… I think good scores and interviews give the rest of your app a generally positive light, and if you have relatively good essays and ECs, then all the better. Then again I think you could say that for any application process perhaps… just saying that scores and GPA mean a ton and shouldn’t be ignored. Transcripts are definitely the most important thing.</p>
<p>^^^^^I think the most important thing for me, trumping my scores (SATI was decent, 1310, GPA was awesome for my school although I’ve heard of some schools on average being much higher), I have ec’s spanning three pages 'cause I’m always helpin someone out and learning stuff and teaching stuff. Math, karate, guitar, cooking, on and on.</p>
<p>So I just took the SATII’s. I could only take three since I did it in one day, and as a standby, and I was just… unprepared. I’m in calculus II, dual enrolled at the local community college, and I am doing really well despite the difficulty of the course, but the mathIIc killed me. I might have done better than I expect, but the most disturbing thing was that some stuff, like the log stuff, I won’t be doing until just next week after not doing it in a class for about a year and a half (woot just got done doing rotating figures and all that). So because I felt I did bad, I took the mathIc and it was much easier, but even then there were a few that I just didn’t know. And I took the writing, and of course that was massively cool.</p>
<p>How important are these damn scores? I took it just cause they were required, and I really don’t feel that they were a reflection of anything because I’m supposed to be learning <em>at</em> my college. That’s why despite wanting to be an engineer I’ve only taken a bunch of physics courses, because I want to learn <em>their</em> way. All that. Meh. Is this reasonable? Bleargh.</p>

<p>Neelesh, be positive. UNC-Chapel Hill admits 20% of applicants, and then of those admits, 20% are out-of-staters. So that is 4% of all applicants!!! So really, it is easier to get into Brown, than into UNC as an o-o-s.</p>
<p>Actually, I believe that it’s only 18% of the admitted students that are out-of-staters. So that’s even more difficult!</p>
