Brown Supplement 2011-2012!

So I was looking at Brown’s supplement this year, just to see if they were re-using any of the questions from last year (I don’t think they are), and wow! There are a lot of mini-essays/short answers. But my favorite question is the fill-in sentence: “If I could do something with no risk of failing, I would ______________.”

What’s your favorite essay/short answer question?

Hmmm…either nobody’s seen the new supplement or they just aren’t replying…

Wait… what?! It’s out already? When I called the admissions office they said it would be out after the common app. I read last years a million times. I’ll look for this new one and get back to you.

Can oh post a link? I didn’t see anything on the website.

I shall post said link! I don’t know how I found it if it’s not supposed to be out yet. Hmm…but it does say 2011-2012 at the top!

Wow. This supplement is going to cause a good drop in the number of applicants, but the one’s who truly belong will definitely be picked with more accuracy. Feeling a lot of respect for the admissions staff.

PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS
I know this is a lot of writing for an application with a less than 9% chance of success, but I urge you to not be scared off by this supplement.

Take your time to organize your thoughts now so that when you start writing it is not the first time you are thinking about these questions.

Brown application aside, these questions are quite pertinent to your life and the introspection needed to answer them will help you in whatever you’re doing.

If you start in a timely manner, I think this is a wonderful writing exercise. If Brown was on your list of schools don’t let this deter you. If it wasn’t this supplement should put it on there.

Enjoy filling it out! (really)

This is very different from last years. I like it much more. This one really let’s you show who you really are.

I would’ve been so upset that this was my supplement compared to the one 2 years ago… I miss the “What don’t you know?” question. I kind of like the fact that there’s (essentially) a free response essay, though. :)

Yeah, when I first looked at it, my first reaction was “Gosh, how long is this going to take to fill out?!” I wonder if people aren’t going to apply because of the 4 page supplement…hmmm. But I do like it as a whole. It’s not like any supplement I’ve looked at before. It’s got great, unique questions. Like I said before, my favorite one is the “If you could do one thing with no risk of failing…” one. :)

This seems on par with some of the other ivies. I have nt seen last year’s for a comparison.

SO glad the supplement wasn’t this intense when I was applying.

Thanks for posting the link. It’s amazing to me how the application was the exact same for decades, and now it changes every year!

So…who’s actually applying this upcoming application cycle?

I am! This supplement makes me love brown even more! It does seem a lot of work, but the questions are really interesting and I’m actually looking forward to answering them. I checked out a few other ivies’ supplements too, and brown’s is by far the best

^When I applied, Brown wasn’t even on the Common App. This is really not bad…

When I applied (1973), you had to hand write your personal statement (i.e., no typewriters allowed for that part). There was a rumor that the Ad Com used a handwriting analyst!

I absolutely love this supplement. It gives you so many opportunities to showcase the different parts of your personality and who you are as a student. I was worried when I saw last year’s because I felt like it was way harder to show how you fit into the Brown community, but this is much better. Definitely my favorite supplement so far.

I really like the question “Sculptor Jacques Lipchitz once said, ‘Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around. If you go higher, things will look different; if you go lower, again they will look different. It is a point of view.’ With this in mind, describe a moment when your perspective changed.” I know the answer doesn’t have to be art related, but I like that they used a quote from an artist. I’m also finding that the character limit is too small! It’s hard to fit everything I want to say under 250 characters.

As a student applying this year, this suppliment actually makes me worry a little less. I always feared of being just a number in the application pile, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now. All of the questions on the suppliment will really show a student in many dimensions, not just the typical “why [college x]?” and additional essay. I hope many more colleges learn form Brown in the future.

This supplement makes me love Brown so much more because of how interested they are in applicants as actually people not scores and numbers. I really wish I could apply this year. Fingers crossed that next year’s supplement is equally as wonderful.
