Brown Transfer 2024

I’m attempting to transfer to Brown right now, and I wanted to create a place for others like me to discuss and anticipate our decisions!

Brown is the only school I applied to as a transfer.

So why the transfer?

The elite schools require a good reason for transfer.

Someone, currently at that college, with your major, would need to drop out to make a space for you. That usually doesn’t happen. Since you appear to be a recent HS grad, did you apply there and not get in?

They will still have your application, and if they didn’t accept you before, they are not going to change that decision.

Also, transfers get limited financial aid.
The universities save their dollars for incoming freshman.
I know it’s not what you wanted to hear, but that’s the experience that is common among these schools.

  1. What is your academic reason for wishing to transfer to Brown?

  2. Did you apply to Brown as a HS senior? If so, what was the admission result?

  3. Why just Brown for transfer?

Why did you ONLY apply for transfer to Brown? That extremely limits your options.

This is incorrect.

How is this incorrect?

Edited to add: I know that admissions tend to keep minimal information on recent applicants.

Unless the applicant has provided a major change in error of grades, EC’s or academic status, the results tend to stay the same.

You said, “if they didn’t accept you before, they are not going to change that decision.”

There are many examples on CC that contradict this statement. In fact, I have a son at an IvyPlus school. He was accepted as a transfer after being rejected coming out of high school. It isn’t a slam dunk (far from it), but it isn’t 100% impossible.

After less than a year of study at another university, it would be very difficult to transfer in.

If you son transferred into an ivy school, I am assuming he presented a strong core of academics at another university prior to his transfer application. Similar to my son who transferred out of a top ten to another strong school.

Applying, after a semester of work, doesn’t appear to be a strong indicator of a strong resume for transfer to Brown.

No one is saying that such a transfer is likely, but when you said "they are not going to change that decision" you made it sound completely impossible, which is inaccurate, and therefore bad advice.

I’m also currently at another T10. And I am aiming only to transfer to Brown—they have a specific program not available at my current school.

That’s a good reason. Good luck to you!

I also stated that the OP needed a good reason for transfer, and then later, stated that such a school is not going to change that decision (based upon not having a good academic reason for transfer and limited time to change the core record.) I should have elaborated upon that.

The OP can try and no, it is not 100% impossible, with caveats, if the academic changes and EC supplementals have dramatically improved within a semester’s time.

Respectfully, I believe I hold the greatest reason to transfer: my own academic pursuit! Brown’s open curriculum (and specific program offerings, which I won’t name here due to anonymity) allow me to pursue a unique field that’s almost inaccessible at my current college.

I believe that having an application submitted previously (i.e., last year) will only show more dedication to Brown. Last year, my biggest pitfall was my lack of leadership in ECs. Since then, I’ve become the president of a club on campus, VP of another large organization, and done much more work outside of academia. It reflects well on my application. I am not going to share too much as I don’t want to publicize myself, but my application is much stronger this cycle.

My grades are not a concern, but I appreciate your comments. My current school has considerable grade deflation, but I’m still maintaining high marks. I will say many of my close peers and family members do not understand why I’m doing this transfer from a similar caliber school. Still, I think Brown will be a more fitting environment for me personally and academically.

Then…apply and see…but do not sever ties with your current college until you know the outcome of your transfer application.

Oh, absolutely! Not severing ties with anyone. In fact, I joined a fraternity.
