Brown Transfer Fall 2020

@brownredblue I’ve just come to terms with the fact that transfer students are not the first priority of any university. While I recognize the impacts of COVID-19 are disparate depending on which university/campus we’re talking about, my assumption is that Brown and other universities like it are going to prioritize their retention rates and admissions rates for freshmen populations. I have yet to see any other university offer deferment to transfers (outside of truly extenuating circumstances like military duty). Perhaps if universities begin to officially declare remote work/closure for the fall, they might announce options for transfers… but I wouldn’t expect an offer of deferment from Brown or its peer institutions.

mine went away too!

This is somewhat true, somewhat not. Whitman College gave me the option to defer enrollment. However, Wesleyan’s decisions came out today and they went from accepting >25% to <10%. For these more selective universities, this decrease in admissions may be an inevitable trend, unfortunately.

why would covvid cause a decrease in admissions? just curious

Literally no one has any idea what they are saying, you will probably get a more accurate answer from a magic 8 ball . Weslyan reduced transfer admissions this year, and Georgetown and Stanford increased transfer admissions this year. The only way you will know if you get into a university is when they release decisions.

do you think that we could hear tonight?

Does anyone know how long after the stuff disappeared last year that people got their acceptances/rejections?

Wait, how do people know Stanford increased transfer admissions when decisions are not out yet? Did someone talk to an admissions officer?

Not to get too off topic, but supposedly they are taking more transfers this year. However this is CC so people could just make stuff up so take it with a few grains of salt.

The portal changed on the 29th last year as well, and the heard on the 2nd. However, I am unaware if the supplemental materials disappearing is the same as the checklist disappearing.

May 1st is when people last year heard back

Do you have the statistics of Stanford/Georgetown?

I do not wish to derail the Brown forum. Both projected stats are available on each respective transfer forum if you truly are interested.

Last year the email was like this:

Dear XXX,

Beginning at 12 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 29, the checklist on your Brown Applicant Portal will no longer be available for viewing. Please double check the status of your application to be sure that we have received your required materials. You may continue to upload any supplementary materials and updates through your Brown Applicant Portal until 12 p.m. EDT on April 29.

Your admission decision will be available online in early May. An email will be sent notifying you of the decision release date and time.

Sincerely,

Office of College Admission
Brown University

BUT you have to be aware that they don’t notify you in advance on when the decision release. The next email I receive is letting me go on the portal to check for updates.

hm, maybe they just didn’t want to look through more supplementary materials lol

Wasn’t it May 2nd?

Worrying about these little changes like periods after checkmarks and stuff disappearing is just going to make us even more anxious. Based on last year, we should just wait for some type of email from Brown that tells us what will be happening before making assumptions. Because of corona, everything’s messed up and the AO is probably waiting till the commit date for freshman on May 1st to see how many spots are open for transfers and then release. That’s just my opinion and it might not be true because some schools have already released transfer decisions but as @leafygreens said, we’re most likely their last priority.

I know Brown is need-aware for transfers. Do you guys know if they accept people with full need? I was rejected from Wesleyan today and the only 2 people who got in (10% acceptance rate this year) on CC were full pay.

Yeah, Brown probably accepts people who are full need, but certainly with higher difficulty. I got waitlisted with lots of required aid (pell grant recipient), so who knows.

Transfer1210 how do you know that Wesleyan has a 10% acceptance for transfer applicants this year?
