Brown Transfer Fall 2020

No Idea? I think I’ve heard that speculated before but never confirmed. I’m interested in going into the History and Literature/Creative Writing concentrations

I feel like because of the open curriculum and how students are free to explore, there wouldn’t be that much emphasis on the concentration especially because you don’t have to declare but it’s a guess so I could be wrong.

Any thoughts on if Brown will admit a greater or smaller number of applicants for transfer this cycle (due to covid)?

I could see a rationale for them accepting both more or less students, I think it really depends on how covid affects freshmen admits, students wanting to defer, and probably how much federal funding they’re able to allocate (they’re endowment isn’t super strong relative to other ivies). I would assume this benefits the likelihood of being accepted if you didn’t apply for financial aid since they are need-aware, but non-full pay applicants probably won’t see much of a difference.

I know it’s mostly speculation at this point, but given that they’ve released decisions in the first few days of May in years past and May 1 is on a Friday this year, does anyone think they’ll release decisions on the weekend? Or do they only do it on weekdays when they are in office

@addy701 again, this is all speculation – I would assume that they would either release the week before or after, and not on the weekend. We will have a better indication depending on when we receive the email and when the checklist disappears.

hey i got in too! not going though, if i dont get into brown going to USC

Brown’s President Paxson just wrote an op-ed for the NYT titled “College Campuses Must Reopen in the Fall. Here’s How We Do It.” It seems like remote learning, at least for Brown, won’t continue till the fall semester!

@hsc927 that’s definitely a pro for admission

Sorry to break the flow again, wanting opinions on my basic stats, gpa is below those listed on website, but maybe test scores will balance it?

School: T5 LAC
Major: Philosophy
HS GPA:~3.9, 2nd in class
College GPA: ~3.7, 4.0 in major, being brought down by a B in an advanced science class that I took out of pure interest–not wisest choice, but interesting
SAT: 1500 (didn’t send)
ACT: 35 (sent)
ECs: member of philosophy group, officer of career based group, and student health group leader, leader of another club too (not stating specifics for privacy)
Recs: 1: 9-9.5/10, 2: 7-8/10

Seems v competitive, considering you attend a top LAC your GPA probably shouldn’t hurt too much. There’s no way to know for certain, a lot of it is going to come down to essays, LORs, and ECs.

@yeetahh1 OMG I’m also applying from a Top 5 LAC (Amherst) as a philosophy major! Really nervous for decisions to come out. Not expecting much though due to SAT.

@transfer1210 LOL small world. I’m not at Amherst, but wild nonetheless. Same. My GPA has me a bit nervous, it’s not bad, but just based of Brown’s website stats…

@nibbie thanks. eases the nerves a bit, regardless of the final outcome

Hi!! I think I would be quite late here but here are my stats
Some background: Asian female in STEM and international student

Current college: Boston College
Major: Math and Economics
GPA (college): 3.864
I am also taking 4000-level math and honor courses
GPA (high school): 9.1/10 (in a gifted high school in Vietnam)
ECs: mostly about math like math camp, research
SAT: 1460 (super score 1500) with essay 20/24
SAT 2: 800 Math lv2
AP: Calc Bc (5), Stat (4), 2 Econs (5 and 5)
Fi aid: I got an external source for a scholarship so I didn’t apply for aid.

Wish luck with your college admission!!

Do you think being a transfer applicant from another ivy hurts chances or doesn’t mean anything (good or bad)?

Brown seems to admit quite a few lateral-transfers, atleast according to their accepted students profile and the posts from last year. Likely, students who’d succeed at top schools would succeed at Brown. At the same time, you have to come up with a compelling narrative for “why Brown specifically” and it’s difficult to elaborate the “specifically” if you’re transferring from another elite research university.

I should also post my stats:

Some background: ORM pre-med english major

Current college: T20 Lac, applied for financial aid with 32k EFC. Hoping to transfer as a junior.
Major: English. Planned on Literary Arts (and Chemical Biology).
GPA (college): 3.833 (4.0 midterm report)
GPA (high school): 3.67 U.W. 25% rank. Bad, I know, mostly due to grades freshman year. I killed all of my APs.
Hook: Compelling personal narrative, which ties in nicely for my desire to transfer.
ECs: Undergrad Teaching Assistant, lots of tutoring, mentoring premedical students, research, internship at a large hospital, directed volunteering (one as an English TA in a foreign country). My ECs are centered around medicine, service, and writing, with a couple of competitions, awards, publications, and leadership positions to my name.
SAT: 1540. ACT: 35.
SAT 2: 740 Math II, 770 Biology.
AP: Five on seven AP Exams.
Recs: One spoke on my abilities as a writer. One on my abilities as a scientist. I don’t believe in ranking recs or ECs since those are mushy and intangible.
Video: A video of me getting knocked out, and how that tied into my tenacity.

Also, just for future reference: Withdraw option taken out in the first wave of withdraw option removal, Brown did request IDOC information. Submitted video.

lol why are we sharing stats now? we’ll be hearing back soon enough! and anyway, regardless of stats, it’s impossible to determine your admission decision until you see it on your portal.

i’m sure that if you’re here as a transfer applicant, you have the courage and tenacity to succeed anywhere–even if that place is not brown.

So does anyone think that it could possibly be posted this week?

i appreciate how brown is kinda MIA and pretty straightforward about transferring. like there is no biases in comparison to other IVYs…

lol
