I would say decent MOSTLY because of the fact you go to one of the top privates in CA. You have a lot of EC’s but it doesn’t look like you gained leadership in many of them? You studied CS and did research, fantastic. Except for the fact you’re applying as a Sociology major. Maybe consider double majoring or minoring? You are, however, applying ED which should about triple your chances, you have a decent ACT (maybe get it up?) and keep your grades strong. I’d say if you condensed your core EC’s and made them relevant to what you’d be doing at Brown, you will be fine. If I had to put a number on it…8/10 as it stands.

@codemachine what major do you think I should apply as to increase my chances of acceptance? I thought sociology because my research is not heavily computer science based, it shows how social media could affect the success of stocks. Social media --> sociology and how people connect to each other? What do you think I should major in or double major in?

In that case, you could tie that together with a CS double major. That way, you can propose some sort of research project focusing on how social media directly ties into computer science, instead of theoretically. Brown is full of liberal artsy types, so a “different” double major like Soci and CS could stand out if you explain your research well.

Your ECs are very diverse, as you said, but your academic stats will not stand out. Assuming your sat is no less than 2000, and uw is around 3.8, then you will be strongly relying on your ECs. With that being said, I do think that you have a shot. Sociology is not necessarily one of their top majors, so applying into that field will raise your chance of admission. Although your ECs make you a strong applicant, it would be wise to have a few “safety” schools. I wish you the best of luck.

I agree with @codemachine Research in comp sci is great, but it isn’t really all that relevant to sociology. Perhaps research in sociology can help. One thing that I will stress to you is that Brown is extremely particular with its applicants and I would say more than any other school. Brown wants students who will fit the “Brown image.” That is a strong emphasis on liberal arts. They rejected the valedictorian from my high school, but you have more ECs than she did. Also, being an intended sociology major with strong essays and recommendations, I think that they will like you. You are a strong applicant and with ED, Brown is a low reach to match. Good luck and thank you for chancing me!

Don’t get me wrong. Your ECs are great. Very diverse. But, it’s all over the place. You interned at a hospital and a financial center. You want to use social media to predict stock movement? That’s a unique goal that I could see you do well with in college if you convey that on your application. Also, don’t try to pick a major that increases your chances because top colleges like Brown see that you would know that your declaring a major to get in. If I have all my ECs that are business related, but I say I want to major in East Asian Studies, they can call my lie. They are aware that you can change your major in college too. I see some unrelated things and it doesn’t help that you don’t have any leadership in them. You also have 4 APS up to junior year. However, you go to a “top private school” and seems that your scores and academic credentials are fine. I would say Brown is a low reach for you. Those are my two cents.

In my opinion it looks like it would be unlikely for you to get in ED to Brown since your GPA and ACT is somewhat low. I think that if you maybe got a 34 ACT you’d be better off. You have a chance because you are in a competitive private school but that is an excuse for GPA not standardized tests so try to bring that up if you can! Try to also get some leadership positions in your ECs or anything you do, maybe try to start something in your school! Overall I would say just try to get your ACT up and hope for the best, if not don’t be disappointed and you’ll get in somewhere great for sure!
