Hi - looking for feedback on Physics major at Brown University. Specifically:
According to NCES, Brown had 24 primary graduating majors in Physics in the last data set, which is pretty good for a medium-sized university and implies a pretty substantial undergrad program overall:

There were also a few more people doing Geophysics, Chemical Physics, and Biophysics.
Thanks so much - this is such a great database!
Would you have any idea about the research opportunities for UG students?
I can see the the faculty : students ratio is pretty decent so I am assuming students have ample interactions with Professors.
With respect to undergraduate research opportunities in physics, the list of colleges attended by Apker recipients can be interesting to browse through:
Although it’s not specified in the Wikipedia article, a Brown graduate received an Apker in 1989. Because of the prestigious and rare nature of this award, this actually may represent an over-performance.
Here’s what Brown says - if you haven’t already seen.
You can always contact the school to find out about things like cohort size. I’m sure the department has an advisor or liaison for prospective students.
From talking to many kids and hearing from others on here, I think it’s safe to say at most any school research is available for those who seek it - but it won’t necessarily knock on your door. You have to knock on the door of professors.
My son attended Brown and one of his house/teammates was a physics concentrator. He wound up both doing on campus research and being a TA. I believe he spent a summer interning in Boston at a hedge fund but need to confirm.
He is currently pursuing an advanced degree at MIT. By all measures he appears to have had a positive experience with a variety of opportunities and options upon graduation.
He stood out because the PLME kids called him the smart kid in the house😀
They certainly suggested during our college visit that they make a real point of having research opportunities available for undergrads. But we did not ask about Physics specifically, so while I suspect it would be a good choice, I can’t offer any specific.
Thanks - this is interesting
This is so promising! Thanks for sharing an experience story
