Bruno Mars!

The Chili Peppers have been performing longer than Bruno Mars has been alive. They were ground breaking in their day because they fused present and past sounds and then added the future. It’s the future that Mars is missing, IMO. We’ll see where he is in 30 years.

What does it matter where he is in 30 years? Is the purpose of the half time show to give homage to a “very” famous artist of the past or past and present or is it to provide good entertainment?? While you will never please everybody, the votes against last nights show being quite good seem to be few and far between - here on CC and in news reports, social media, and the water cooler at work. Mission accomplished by Bruno.

Some info on Bruno:
Billboard’s 2013 Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer and musician. The 18-time Grammy Award nominee and Grammy winner has sold over 130 million singles worldwide. His current album Unorthodox Jukebox and his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans have a combined certification total of 60x platinum worldwide. According to Billboard, Mars scored his first five “Hot 100” No. 1s faster than any male since Elvis Presley. As a singer, songwriter and producer, Mars has an impressive catalog of 22 “Hot 100” hits. Mars is nominated for multiple major categories at this year’s Grammy Awards including both “Record” and “Song of the Year” for his hit “Locked Out Of Heaven,” in addition to “Best Pop Vocal Album” for Unorthodox Jukebox and “Best Pop Solo Performance.” Bruno and his eight-piece band The Hooligans are set to launch the second leg of their sold-out Moonshine Jungle world tour in North America this summer.

Back to my coments: In addition he was touted to be the half time show and on his own accord (or at his own suggestion) HE asked the RHCP to perform with him. His gesture. I like Bruno a lot but also be it known that all of his music is not “squeaky clean” - absoulutely fine by me, but newbies should look beyond his fancy footwork and winning style/smile to really learn about his music.

I definitely think he didn’t lack in “substance” if that’s what you’re implying.

Better than any other Super Bowls I can think of in recent memory, that’s for sure.

I think a few people don’t like Bruno Mars because he’s a multi-ethnic guy born in Hawaii…

“You said Beyoncé wasn’t current and that Bruno Mars is more relevant at their respective Super Bowl performances?”

No, I didn’t say Beyoncé wasn’t current. I said the RHCP weren’t current. To abasket’s point, I don’t particularly care whether the intent of the SB halftime show is to highlight fresh new blood or pay homage to the legends of the past, but to me the RHCP are neither current nor legendary so to me they were an odder choice than Bruno Mars, who is clearly current. I like the RHCP just fine and I think they did a fine job. And I thought Bruno Mars did a terrific job and established himself. It was just an observation on my part. Not a knock on anyone’s performance.

". Dancing around a stage may appeal to some, and I’m sure many find it entertaining.
I prefer substance over style. "

Oh please. There is a LOT to be said for someone who has talent AND has a sense of showmanship. Nothing wrong with caring about the crowd.

And timing, PG. Awesome timing!

I saw Bruno Mars in concert last summer. The concert was great!! Bruno is an amazing performer. I highly recommend going to see him if you get a chance.

If that’s what you meant, then what was the point of including Beyoncé with Janet Jackson?

I agree with JHS. Poor comparison. Off the wall.

I thought Bruno was a fine choice and it was a good free concert. I would never seek him out or pay to hear him and am more likely to turn the channel if a song of his comes on the radio. That’s not likely since I don’t listen to any channels that would even play his music. His music is pleasant enough, he’s a good entertainer and, as I said, I like watching him dance.

Seriously? 8-|
I was underwhelmed because I expected someone a little bigger for the Superbowl, like Beyonce, Madonna or Janet Jackson.
Paul McCartney backed by remaining members of Nirvana would have been good.
Also hearing the reason for selecting his stage name made me throw up in my mouth a little.
:stuck_out_tongue:

For lots of reasons I’ve never been a fan of Bruno Mars. .But I need to give it up to him. Last night he did a great job. He gave it everything he’s got and he put on a genuinely entertaining show.
I said it. Now I can go back to disliking him.

I’m pretty sure there was a dose of tongue in cheek in that comment.

TIC doesn’t translate very well over the webs.
I guess thats what those animations are for.

I saw the Jackson, beyonce and Madonna shows, mand truthfully was underwhelmed. Well…i liked Madonna! I didn’t know what to expect last night. I expected to be very underwhelmed. Instead I was very entertained by this show, and performers (although I will say, I would have done without the guy who wasn’t wearing a shirt…who was that?).

But the showmanship, dancing, singing…just the whole production was great.

And the game itself was such a washout, mthat it was nice to have an entertaining halftime show!

I too thought it was tongue in cheek…

Well, I didnt get that.

“If that’s what you meant, then what was the point of including Beyoncé with Janet Jackson?”

My point, which I clearly didn’t state very well … to me, Bruno Mars was just as well-known of a current performer as Beyoncé and Janet Jackson were at the time they did their SB shows. Either way, all 3 fell into the “current pop star” category, not into the “living legend” category a la Paul McC, or perhaps Madonna. And RHCP fits neither of those categories IMO. To me, RHCP is just a band that was popular 20 years ago, but didn’t make it anywhere near legend status. That’s all. Like I said, I still enjoyed both performances, and had all the songs they played on my iPod, so there you have it.

Not an argument that really needs an extended life, but wow, I FULLY feel that Beyonce (2013) and Janet Jackson (10"years ago at the Super Bowl) were VERY well known and yes, much better known and established than Bruno. Not taking away frm Bruno, but credit where credit is due for Beyonce and Janet.
