I was accepted to Stony Brook’s Engineering Scholars for Medicine Program!!! Hell yeah!!! Again, congrats to everybody who has found success this year!

Congrats @TheBombingRange

@ TheBombingRange, congrats! I have been accepted to the same program as well!! Now I have to pick from Brooklyn BA MD, Geneseo-SUNY Upstate BS MD, and Stony Brook BE MD. Somehow all within NY state :). I think the choice is clear.

Congrats @TheBombingRange and @Shoumik95

@Shoumik95 are you definitely going to SB? What are the factors that are helping you make your final decision?

@bombingrnage, Congratulations!!! We parents feel very happy when we see kids get into their dream college.

@Shoumik95, Congratulations.

Congrats @shoumik95 @bombingrange - SUNY Stonybrook is a great college.
Btw, 've heard that the Geneseo/Upstate programs is also very good.

@ TheBombingRange, until today, I was leaning toward Geneseo SUNY upstate over Brooklyn BA MD. Although I see a strong opinion about outstanding clinical experience opportunity in a public, urban medical university from Brooklyn i.e. Downstate, I thought the differences between downstate and upstate medical were small. Upstate had better facilities, more friendly people, above national average step1 score, equivalent residency mathcing list but comes with colder weather. Brooklyn for UG, while with Macaulay Honors College, is a great program but I was not sure about the regular student body (beyond MHC student) that I will take pre-med classes with, the rigor of the course work, and the lack of traditional college experience from living in apt. in Brooklyn. So my thought was med schools were equally good (both are in-state for me and hence affordable as well), I would get a MUCH better UG experience in SUNY Geneseo with a stronger student body, rigorous academics, traditional college environment but Geneseo is literally in out of no where (5 hours from home). With SB, it’s the highest ranked med school within SUNY system + stronger student body (met students graduated from Cornell/ Columbia/WashU in SB med school frequently) + better residency matching + modern facilities (similar to private med school); UG in BME (SB BME is nationally recognized, among top 50) is excellent, lots of UG research opportunity in BME labs, in SB health science center and nearby Brookhaven national lab. Being among the small group of students in honors college within a large university is excellent and I love the suburban, large SB campus. In the rare event of failing to meet the program requirement, I will still be a Biomedical Engineer from a decent program :). It’s within 2 hrs from home, free tuition & fees for 4 years. So SB is THE TOTAL overall package with a strong UG and best SUNY medical and most affordable and best location (from my perspective: safer than Brooklyn, not in the middle of nowhere like Geneseo). I had some discomfort about the other 2 options! I have none with SB and I will go, no doubt! I worked in SB HSC as a research assistant last summer, I liked it so much and wanted this badly. I will go HAPPILY!!

@ NKB747 and @ matrix007 THANKS!

congratulations to everyone that got accepted!

@Shoumik95 extremely well said. I definitely agree on many of those points. They gave you tuition and fees as well? How can you beat that, right? You don’t realize it at first, but the cost of living in Brooklyn is fairly expensive when you consider utilities, furnishings, rent, and the cost of food. For curiosity, do you know if there is a stipulation about the number of MCATs you can take at SB, like the max of 3 tests at BC? Idk if you can apply to other med schools at BC, but I know they mentioned you can’t at SBU SOM. You seem really happy, it’s awesome they actually admitted more than one person to engineering this year (maybe we were the only two). I’ll be making my decision very soon. I’m still going to go to the BC Macaulay reception on the 17th and the SBU Brookhaven tour next Friday just to check out everything one more time after being accepted to their programs. Maybe I will see you again at either of these events!

@desigirl … Yes, u Toledo has different flow charts for premed bioengineering / md. They have 4 years and 5 years flow charts. I am thinking of going to u.toledo bs.md . How about you? Have u made decision where u going?

@ TheBombingRange, SB offered me a Presidential Scholarship that covers my tuition and fees for 4 years. They seem to offer different amount of scholarship to different students with the same title, not sure based on what. I agree with you that living in Brooklyn could be more expensive than living in dorm for reasons you mentioned. I also worry about safety if have to return to my apt from library @ 2AM (never lived in large city, let alone by myself). Good question on MCATs for SB. Will need to find out. You can’t apply outside at all or you will lose your spot in SB if you do? If 2nd one, it’s the same as Brooklyn as well, right? Median GPA and Avg MCAT of SB accepted students in regular route is 3.7+ and 33. For an Asian applicant like me, it could be easily 3.8+ and 35 to get into SB in regular route. So I am not taking any chance by applying out :). Meeting the SB requirement (whatever it’s) will be much easier than meeting their requirement for traditional admission process. I care more about being among a bright student body (SB BME avg SAT CR + M > 1350; Honors College Avg SAT CR + M ~ 1500) and pursue a rigorous curriculum. If I do well in that setting (that’s quite a strong crowd by any measure), MCAT score will be automatically taken care of. I am also signed up to those events. I might let Brooklyn know ASAP so that someone else can get a chance (Brooklyn keep people in wait list unlike UMiami). I will attend SB events (Brookhaven tour or Honors College receiption) and sure we will meet again for years to come :). I heard somewhere (may be from you) that SB accepted 1 student in BS/MD program last year. So I went there expecting really nothing and have been pleasantly surprized today!

@pgans12 did u get my pm?

@shoumik, SB is a great choice, has excellent reputation in science and math, i think medical science building is brand new. Only accepted 1 kid last year? didn’t seem right.

@ pcb1604 Per the SBU admission person in Stony Brook’s thread, that was the case in fall of 2011 (so that would be year before last, not last year. sorry I was off by a year). I think they don’t have a predetermined number of people for acceptance every year (it varies from 1 to 10 by the year):

@Shoumik95 I want to check out Brooklyn at the reception one more time before deciding, but I definitely know where I am leaning. Yes, there is only one person from Engineering from last year, she is very nice. Actually, after the interviews at the med school, I met with her in her lab. Very cool research that she is doing as well. I am going to email her again to let her know I got in and ask her some of the more informal questions about dorming, course choices, thing like that. I am also going to email the med school admissions office to ask about the number of MCAT attempts you have. I will definitely be at Brookhaven, but idk if I should go to the Honors reception or the Engineering reception. Are you going to go to both? Idk if I should just do one, especially because I will already be there on Friday… If you want the the student’s email I can pm it to you so you can talk with her, let me know.

hey guys. I need your help on a decision.
I’ve been accepted into UMKC’s 6 year BA/MD program in addition to Union/Albany’s Leadership in Medicine in program. Both programs are about 500k (i am out of stater). I do however get an MBA at the end of the Union/Albany program although I don’t know how useful that would be because I’m getting an MBA as an undergraduate starting when I’m 18 years old and I’m not sure whether hospitals would even consider that a valid MBA…Also, UMKC’s match list is significantly better than Albany’s match list.
Which program should I pick?

@nkb747 : did u get my message? Pl let me know.

@pgans12 I got your message and sent you a pm.
