^ Would love to hear your reasoning against Pitt when compared to Drexel. Thanks!

Ditto on the PITT explanation…I’d be curious why one might choose Drexel over Pitt!

Certainly beauty in the eye of the beholder…

Yeah I didn’t know you got into Pitt! Then again, their requirements are insane. I think you made a good choice.

well, I’m for one not surprised by Butterfly’s choice. If you check out yield rate across all med schools, Pitts is at low end 30s, probably lower than all four meds in Philly, you kind wonder why?

Pitts Me is strong on neuro-related fields, probably where most of NIH funding go, you can shoot for their residency if you decide on these specialties later in med school, as oppose to grinding through 8 years there for bs/md combined. Just my thoughts.

I believe Butterfli explained it earlier here or another thread. Her undergrad is free before med school at Drexler while it has a big price tag OOS at Pitt.

^ Found it. Thank you! If I read the posts correctly, it appears that Pitt is in-state for Butterfli.

Agree that Pitts has many internationally renown programs, especially the Cancer Center. Having said that, agree with Butterfli’s choice when one takes into consideration the financial side of the equation because the financial side is a constant in the equation but the quality and training outcome are variables, depending on how motivated the student is. My daughter is going to BU and I will end up spending around half a million dollars on her. That is why I have cautioned her to be wise in choosing her partner. She certainly should avoid choosing a partner who has a half a million dollar loan to start her life with!

wow i think everyone just summed it up for me
Yes, I am in state for both Drexel and Pitt. I think the financial aspect was a big part of it, but my parents were going to foot the bill anyway. I guess I just wanted to go somewhere where the drop out rate was 0. Plus, I wanted to get that full college experience without stressing about grades. I mean come on, a 3.5 and 29 or 31 on MCATs? A 3.5 is required to graduate with honors anyway! And the 29/31 is really the average for drexel and I’d like to think i’m an above average student
(not to sound arrogant at all there). It was just a matter of…well, I stressed SO much in high school to get into these programs, but do I need to stress even more during my undergrad for a 3.75 @pitt, then compete with my class at one of the best med schools in the country for good grades/residency? I want to live my life…like REALLY live it. I don’t wanna have to worry, at least for 4 years. I think these are the four years we have to expand our horizons, experience college, make new friends, meet new people, and find who we are as individuals. I’ve found out who I am academically, now it’s time to see who I can become in every other category. Sure there’s no MCATs at Pitt, but those huge class sizes and brilliant minds that are going to set the curve? I liked the small town feel of RMU, which gives me confidence that I need during undergrad. So what if Drexel’s not prestigious? It’s about becoming a physician. That’s what we all dream about becoming - not for the fancy prestigious diploma or money, though, it’s for the genuine love of the field…a genuine love of helping people…a genuine love of science and discovery. At least, that’s my reasoning.

Hear, hear… Good choice and good luck!!! No matter what program you are going to, keep up the hard work and success will follow.

it’s all good…but dont be intimidated by Pitt…I have a friend there on life support and he’s got a 3.87 whilst in a COMA…now that’s QUALITY life support

May I ask how on earth he is doing school work while on a coma?

@abkmom. Would you mind posting your sons stats. I am currently a junior and very much interested in the PACT program.

thebro Congratulations on being accepted to both PACT and Shape. could u kindly st your stats. Thanks

Stats are on the Results page.

Congrats to everyone that graduated/will graduate! I’m pretty sure everyone here graduated either Val or Sal

Sorry, guys i’m kind of new to CC but I’ve been reading threads for a couple years now. I was wondering if any of you who applied to these BS/MD programs used any tutors or application development programs or well found someone who knew about the programs to help look over essays, supplements and such and whether this was any help/ worth the money?

Nope. My D did all the application work and essays herself. I looked over one and a research supervisor looked over another for gr. corrections and general flow.

My D did use a private councelor. Her school graduated almost 600 kids, way to many to get personal attn. Having said that, the person we hired had never had anyone try for BAMD so I think my D taught her a lot about these programs. She was very helpful with keeping my D on deadline and reading my D’s essays. She would not let us read everything she wrote. You know many teenagers think their parents are less than helpful so a private councelor was a good route for us.

It is not worth the money to hire a counsellor. Between the student, the parents and school teachers this can be managed.

Spend your money on an SAT tutor to max out your score and get Michele Hernandez’s two books A is for Admission which applies to combineds as much as Ivies and her book on writing the college essays. My D had a local with a PHD in English read over her essays. The money spent on SAT tutor will pay for itself ten fold. Make a chart with all the due dates for each school so you can glance at it daily.
