@IMGDAD I think he should still go for the interview. Even if he decides he will apply out later it’s more interview practice and things may change in the next few months - I am a believer of keeping all options open. One of those other schools might just be a better fit for him - give it a chance; he made it this far to the interview - go all the way. You can always turn them down if you still decide it’s not good for him. I heard that UMKC some years has younger students too.

@Midhelper, thank you. He does not need to make his decision about the interview at Texas Tech until the end of next week. So we will sit on it for now. Now my son is saying that even if his choice is only between UMKC and the BS/DO program, he would rather do the BS/DO program because he does not fancy studying over the summer at UMKC. He loves his summer too much. He is also saying he wants to get out of Texas.

@IMGDAD Hmmmmm - there could be something else talking here. Even if it is true I wonder if he would say the same if he had an acceptance in his hand. haha. I think he should give it a shot.Keep options open until the end.

So I was wondering, for HPME, I self-reported my GPA to include 1st semester senior year since that was my current GPA, but I sent in an unofficial transcript that showed my GPA without 1st semester senior year (b/c that transcript was the most up-to-date one and b/c HPME said it didn’t need to be sent 1st semester senior grades). I did specify in the self-reported grade section that my GPA included 1st semester senior year, but will they still only consider what was in my transcript?

My other stats/ec’s are fine, but I wanted to give an honest portrayal of my GPA. In retrospect however, I think I overthought self-reporting my GPA though… >.<

I did the same thing…I dont understand why u r worried.

If someone has made the cut for the screening to apply to HPME, it is no longer an issue with near perfect stats that caused a rejection.

I am led to believe the next cut is entirely based on how much research one has done and they focus heavily on research at that point. The only people who I know who ended up there have several years of research under their belt and not necessarily the best of test scores or the best school rank when more than one person applied from the same school.

IMGDAD - I would be curious to see how Texas interprets residency if parents leave the state after the kid gets an admission. It would be nice if you can find this out in an oblique way rather than stating you are planning to move right now to ask what the ramifications are for a student admitted to combined program when the parents need to move.

Rejected from FAME San Antonio

I know a few people who got into HPME…they didn’t do any research

But they could be the minority…Not sure. I think they just want to see a compelling story in ur essays.

Has anyone received an invite to interview @ Northwestern HPME thus far? I see some posts about rejections but no interviews yet. Perhaps some who applied to HPME can speak to if they had extensive research work experience or not.

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from Miami HPME for an interview?

Re: Northwestern HPME - I don’t think it is just research, because that’s actually the strongest area for my daughter. My guess would be “fit” - I think her laidback personality (even though she is a hardworker) comes through in her essays/ECs, perhaps. :-)

What do u mean by laid back showing in the essays?

@AspiringStudent
Caveat - I am just doing wild guessing, don’t want to lead anyone down the wrong path, but you know how it is, we can’t help trying to figure out “why me” or “why not me” - part of the “grieving” process I guess. Well, I should say “I” not “we” because my daughter isn’t into this sort of soul-searching!

It is the general tone of the essays - she comes across as curious, interested, liking to explore and experiment; rather than singleminded and driven or aggressive. Even the ECs appear the same way. There was one undergraduate interview when she was asked “well, looks like you enjoy a lot of things, but what is your PASSION?” and she was nonplussed because those ARE her passions, but she is not the sort to talk in a dramatic or “passionate” way, if you know what I mean. She is an anti-drama-queen, for want of a better description. Passionate, yes, but quietly so (what she wants to do she will do, but not necessarily talk about it much, she’ll just get it done), if that makes sense.

Ah I see…! Interesting reflection.

Miami HPME interview notifications were all the way back in December, you should’ve been notified by now or you didn’t fill out your applicaition properly

yes…ALL Miami interviews FINALIZED in December!

I am reviewing note from a graduate of HPME who was one of the student interviewers couple of years ago. He said the initial screening to accept the application is driven by numbers. Once the application is turned in, it is driven by research and essays for interview selection. So it is fine to speculate what will get you in but it is best to see what most people did who got in. So far everyone I know had good amount of research work that has been presented and/or published. Whether they deem one specific candidate’s research worthy of selection is not necessarily something we can quantify since a few thousand people apply and they have to bring it down to a respectable 160 to interview.

IMGDAD- Thank you. Good luck to your Son on his interview.
