Congrats to everybody who got accepted to Penn State/Jefferson! For those who got rejected, just remember it’s not the end of the road
BTW, Does anybody know when the results for any of the programs affiliated with Drexel COM will come out?

Do you really think that those who traveled to Philly, to interview at Jefferson, are calmed and comforted by “just remember it’s not the end of the road” ?? Let’s get real folks…some of our brethren are really HURTIN ! and to some of them, it IS the end. :-/ Indeed big congrats to those with good news and hoping that things turn around for those who are struggling with yesterday’s news…

@AspiringStudent- Have you heard from HPME yet? I’m trying to stay calm!

Dumich you are right. Those who are getting rejections - things are very different and difficult. This whole thing is just a big emotional roller coaster. Sometimes it seems like you have a good shot but not everyone posts on CC so we never really get the full story and the full effect of how many people who are really applying. It is not meant as a consolation but you all do have good credentials and where you end up going will be very good too. In the meantime, I wish the strength for those to get through the rough time of rejection. We too know how that feels. Don’t give up, there are other ways to become a doctor.

Ditto “Midhelper”…an emotional roller coaster YEARS in the making and that is very tough, indeed, to swallow…

@starlight27 - maybe you should try calling them near the end of the day tomorrow because they did say all notices should be out by this Friday but they are conducting interviews this week so the admissions people could be busy with that as well.

@dumich you are absolutely right about it being an emotional roller coaster, both for students and parents. I truly hope you are waiting on other BS/MD decisions, and that you get accepted to at least one of your choices. The decision season has just begun, so hopefully you will share some good news here in the coming weeks! Good luck to you.

Not sure if you are in state or OOS, but since Penn State is a state funded school, and I wonder how many OOS candidates do they accept into this program. I know UConn SPiM, Ohio NEOMED, University of Cincinnati DAP, and many other who do accept OOS kids, make it clear that they do have a huge preference for in state kids. If I recall from NEOMED’s website, they accepted only 2 OOS last year from a class of 105. Then there are some programs like University of Illinois’ and Indiana University’s that only admit in state kids. Private schools like Boston U and Northwestern do not have that issue.

Which sort of brings me to the point of hedging one’s applications among several BS/MD programs, and perhaps a BS/DO program or two, if one is firm in their intent to get into an integrated medical program. Backing that up with a good BA or BS pre-med program that would prepare you well to be a med school candidate in the event that one does not get into any integrated programs is always a good idea. There are obvious cost and geographic considerations, and everyone’s situation is different.

Also for those rejected but choosing between other colleges, some have early assurance programs after freshman or sophomore year. Those are good options too.

@coquifrog, I agree with your suggestions. My son is so sure that medicine is what he should be doing (even though I am not that sure about it!) and is so determined about getting into a combined program that he did not apply to any UG only program. Instead, his backup is the BS/DO program that he has been accepted into. Yet, he knows that if he eventually goes to the BS/DO combined program and if he does very well in his MCAT and GPA and decide that he would prefer to pursue an MD instead of a DO after finishing the BS, he can always apply out.

Accepted into SLU medical scholars program

Just rejected from Northwestern
I called earlier today, and she implied that some people might hear on Monday. the last interviews for HPME are next Thursday and Friday. So @AspiringStudent you may still have a chance
Good luck!!

@starlight27 they just told you over the phone? Ugh - sorry to hear that. You have other options still on the burner though right?

Congrats to Penn State/Jefferson accepted students.

@Midhelper- No, I called, and then a little over an hour later they sent me the rejection. She seemed to say that I would hear on Monday though, which is why I was surprised when I opened my email. And I’m not upset, b/c I’ve been expecting the rejection (for over a month at this point); it just would have been nice to receive an interview. I applied to a lot of programs (and was accepted to Jefferson yesterday) so I definitely have options. Thanks for the sympathy :)

@coquifrog- You’re so right about applying widely if you’re serious about BS/MD, because some decisions are so random that it’s better to have more options than less. I also found through the process that I wasn’t as upset by rejections as some other applicants were because I have a lot of options in terms of programs. As for Penn State, I don’t think they take state of residence into much consideration. Most of the people I met at the interview were actually not from Pennsylvania, and I know several people who were accepted that are OOS (like me, medicalboy, and others). Being from PA might give a slight advantage, but apparently not much.

Congratulations to the PSU/Jefferson and SLU Med Scholar accepted students. This should be the start of what I hope is a string of acceptances in the coming weeks.

@med007- yeah, congrats on being accepted to SLU!

starlight - Same story here, acceptance from Penn State/Jefferson yesterday and rejection from HPME today. Such is life.

@starlight27, thanks. Congrats on your Jefferson program acceptance. I do admire yours , @medicalboy, @sadfeet calmness.

This entire forum has been truly a compassionate, telling the facts as they are and making this journey slightly comfortable - I would have gone insane without all of you guys

@starlight27
Sorry about HPME but nevermind, you got Penn State!

@dumich I mean what else do you want me to say to everybody, “Sucks that you didn’t get in?” It really isn’t the end of the road and yeah it was previously mentioned that it is an emotional roller coaster but I was more so going along the lines of what other people are saying; this is not the only way to become a doctor. Everybody here should know that they will be going on to do great things regardless of whether or not they get accepted into a program. We’ve all put in the work and we know we will in the future when we get accepted to medical school later on; perhaps to ones better than Jefferson Medical School.
