Hi,

How many people get offered an interview for SFM and is it selective to get an interview?

Hi,

How many people get offered an interview for SFM and is it selective to get an interview?

They told us that 25 students were offered an interview, 12 were accepted, and 9 matriculated this past year out of around 400 applicants. I wouldn’t give up on an interview if you don’t yet have a program acceptance. Where OOS are you from?

For OOS students, Stony Brook Medical at almost $60K per year tuition is a very expensive option. Comparable other schools (Drexel, Jefferson) might make more sense financially. Plus, I believe Stony Brook UG does not give any merit scholarships (or very minimal). Is that not correct?

I thought Stony Brook required residency although it does not show it in the requirements. Only requirement is to be a citizen or permanent resident?

http://www.stonybrook.edu/ugadmissions/newhonors/scholarsmed.shtml

Please excuse me if I sound any bit pretentious at all, but should I be happy I got an interview?

To be honest, I am grateful for this, but I was never really serious about going to any med programs. I just applied to like 2. Is getting an interview a good sign for chances at other top schools or is it something that people with average stats get?

@TEXASPG - Stony Brook does not require NY residency. My D from Southwest USA has been invited for interview. She already has Jefferson admission and we are debating if it is even worth it to fly to Long Island for another similar program. Collective wisdom from CC is greatly appreciated. Stony Brook MCAT requirement is (much) lower. Is there anything special and different about Stony Brook (compared to Jefferson) that should be considered in our decision factor?

getting an interview depends on which program it is, some interview lots of applicants so it doesnt really mean anything, but some interview select 10/15- for these you should be proud

How many seats are in the Villanova/Drexel Program?

@novic07054 Buckle up for the ride…If you need advice about the process feel free to message me, and there are many others that I’m sure are willing to help.

EDIT: and congrats to everyone that received acceptances recently!

@TheBombingRange I am from New Jersey, so this is definitely a viable option should I get accepted.

I think I’m going to take a chance and go to the interview. What’s the worst that could happen?

@TheBombingRange - Thanks!
Aren’t you at Stony Brook with Engineering? which branch of Engg.will you be doing?
Is there any preference for tri-state applicants?

@artiesoneleg1 - Thanks! will definitely be in touch.

@thejerseygirl- congrats on getting the interview!! I’m jelly haha
Yeah try going and see what happens, though you’ll probs get into NJMS anyways. Good luck!

Congrats to everyone getting acceptances!

@GreenSage - not heard from you for a while.

Yeah I have never heard of any NYS residency requirements for Stony Brook or even Brooklyn College BA/MD for that matter. The only NYS program that I know requires residency is Sophie Davis. I am doing the Engineering Scholars for Medicine program and majoring in Biomedical Engineering. I definitely think its worth it to come interview, especially if you are as close as NJ. We have plenty of students here from OOS in NJ, NH, CT, and other places.

Yes the MCAT requirement is very nice, I can tell you that on the new MCAT we are expected to get a 38/60 so that is still very reasonable. As far as I know Stony Brook has one of the lowest GPA requirements at a 3.2 for Engineering and 3.4 for everything else.

To those who already recd the StonyBrook interview : is it by snail-mail or email

The interview request was sent by email last year.

Is RPI/AMC not sending invites on a weekly basis anymore?

Accepted to Villanova/Drexel BS/MD! Congratulations to everyone who got into BS/MD programs. Can’t wait to meet some of you at Nova this fall!

CONGRATS

@novic07054 ah yeah i haven’t been on in a while!
wow congrats to everyone getting the bs/md spots!! :D

so im guessing we’re supposed to hear back from drexel med in the next few days or so?
