Do colleges offer financial aid to international students for the BS MD programme? Also, how competitive is it to get accepted for an international student?
Admission to BA/MD programs is extraordinarily competitive for US students. Most program have acceptance rates in the single digits.
There are only 8 BS/MD programs in the US that will consider international applicants. The number of internationals accepted each year in total is between 0 and 3.
RE: financial aid. There are 2 parts to FA: undergrad and professional school. Undergrad FA will depend on the policies of the undergraduate institution. Some offer merit or need-based aid; others do not. For professional (medical) school, internationals are generally expected to pay 100% of their COA.
When you say 0 to 3 international students in total, is that of all the schools combined or each school alone?
Even if it’s 0-3 at each of those 8 school…that would be 0-24 total.
You do understand…that an acceptance into a BS/MD program for international students is highly unlikely…right?
And funding this…is a whole other issue. Also a difficult thing.
@WayOutWestMom could you clarify…and also discuss the “ease” or lack of same finding employment in the U.S. after completing any degree here.
It’s my understanding that international students can’t just apply for jobs here after graduation…
@Benhead26 It’s all schools combined.
Additionally, the number of international applicants accepted annually to all US medical schools combined is quite low (around 100 last year) and approximately 85% of those are Canadians.
If you are looking for direct admit medical educations programs taught in English–have you checked out New Zealand or Australia? I don’t believe either country offers FA to internationals, but the program costs are less than in the US.
There are only 5 Colleges in the US that are both need blind and meet 100% demonstrated need for international students. None of these schools have a combined BS/MD program.
This means at these schools especially, your ability to pay will be a factor in admissions. You will need approx $400,000 US for the medical school portion alone (as there will be no financial aid for this part) not counting what you will need to fund for undergrad.
You are in a catch-22. If you have $400,000 for med school, then you don’t need aid for undergrad. If you need aid for undergrad, if will lower your chances of acceptances at both undergrad (where admissions is based on your ability to pay) and med school, where you are expected to show your source of funding.
