BS MD recs for Texas

This discussion was created from comments split from: ***2018-19 Medical School Applicants and Their Parents***.

Hi all !! I’m a dad of a high school junior student, who is planning to apply for BSMD and regular undergrads in a year. Can anyone suggest the best site to find out this year’s profiles that got into MD schools (I’ll filter for Texas). SDN ?

Also @GoldenRock , I just read your earlier post about the bloodbath in CA MD acceptances this year & wanted to share something similar that is now happening in Texas. BTW Congrats on your D’s acceptance into UTSW, from what I gathered it is a great school !!!

  1. We are part of the ~ 1 million folks who relocated to the Dallas Fortworth area in the last 10 years with one of the reasons being kids education. In our case , we relocated from the east coast mainly in the hopes of kids medical school aspirations. I know many folks from CA that did the same - to your point
  2. Most of the big cities in Texas experienced the same explosive growth in the last 10 years
  3. This created a great imbalance in the population vs. infrastructure, including educational opportunities especially MD seats etc. And more so for Asians/ORMs since a lot of folks relocating (including us) are Asians and have similar aspirations like MDs)
  4. From the profiles I gathered this year, Asians/ORMs who got into Texas MD schools are very similar to ones who got into CA or VA MDs. I’m aware of 3 local Asian kids whose MCATs were 522+ and excellent profiles, that got into Texas MDs. Asians below 522 MCAT did not get into MDs from what I can gather

Based on the above - we are now (reluctantly) planning to prepare for applying OOS/privates heavily for our S in BSMDs …

@helperdad - the official med school acceptance data is MSAR report, you can purchase on AAMC site. It breaks down data in many ways and include BS/MD data as well.

As for BS/MD applicants, Asians (particular Indian) is ORM (overly represented). No need to stress out too much. Most people still go thru traditional route to med schools.

As for your gathered info below, that is simply not true. Any 515+ score with 3.7+ GPA is good for getting interviews at most in-state med schools for Asian applicants (except CA residents). Any 520+ score (when combined with high GPA 3.8+) you will get interviews at top med schools . Anyone who scored 520+ but didn’t get into med schools are (1) their GPA is not good (like below 3.5); (2) their interview skill or personality is very bad; (3) they don’t have any clinical or volunteering experience (you will be surprise some people blindly skip this EC).

Medical schools in Texas have a true ORM representation (43% Asians at Texas A&M for example). Texas admission GPAs are very lopsided at 3.8 to 3.9 while MCAT scores can be below 515 at all schools except for those 2 in top 25. Baylor’s median is 518 and UTSW is at 515 or higher.

@helperdad you need to keep something very much in mind…the acceptance rates for BSMD programs are in the low single digits. It’s harder to get accepted to a BSMD program than to a top 20 university. And it doesn’t matter what state you are from.

@WayOutWestMom your thoughts?
