Headed on an 8 day road trip to tour and interview at schools. Will be staying near Berkshire, Emma Willard, Loomis, and Holderness. Any must do stops, sights, restaurants, or shopping in these areas in our down time? We will be celebrating my daughter’s 14 birthday in NH. Or any must dos between Holderness and Philly on the way home? Thanks!
If you happen to be near Emma Willard on a Saturday, I highly suggest you visit the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market! There’s a wide variety of cute flower shops, cafés, clothes shops, and stands making food from around the world. My daughter told me this farmers market is really popular with her classmates – they always have so much fun there!
The farmers market only happens every Saturday, though. Otherwise, I also recommend the Crossgate Mall. It’s a huge mall with I think 150-ish retail shops. It’s actually the only place in the Capital region where you can find Apple, Lululemon, etc. There’s also 2 hotels at Crossgates and a lot of good restaurants.
In Plymouth NH, the town adjacent to Holderness there are a cute shops on Main Street including Dressers Unlimited and Artistic Roots. For food I recommend dinner at Six Burner Bistro, sandwiches and coffee at Chase Street Market/Cafe Mon Alto, Biederman’s Deli, breakfast at Main Street Station or Annie’s Overflow. For entertainment you can see what is happening at the Silver Center at Plymouth State University or the Flying Monkey.
I second the recommendation for Chase Street Market in Plymouth - we always head there when dropping my son off at his summer camp in NH.
Berkshire is fairly rural - we had lunch at a cute cafe call The Marketplace in Sheffield after our interview there. But we stayed in Great Barrington which has more of a downtown with cute shops, a movie theater, ice cream, etc.
There’s bound to be lots of farms between Plymouth, NH and Troy, NY hosting people for apple picking, cider drinking, etc. That’s always been a highlight for our family visits to the area this time of year.
