Is it true that if you have more than one B in a regular class you pretty much have no chance? (What about in a very competitive public school?)

No, that is not true at all. Especially if you go to a very competitive public school.

There is no real cutoff.

are your standardized tests okay at least?

two B’s shouldnt hurt you too much. esp if they were in gr 9 or 10.

I’ve had about four non-athlete friends with a range of 7 to 13 B’s that’ve gone to HYPS. So don’t worry about it.

^I think that’s a bit optimistic. I don’t think a couple of Bs kill one, but 7-13 of them seems improbable unless they have a strong hook. I’m not at all sure legacies would get by with that, either. At any rate, I would never advise my daughter along those lines.

Your chances at admission are based on your overall characteristics, including grades, scores, ECs, recs, interview, etc. They will all have to be strong, but they do not necessarily all have to be equally strong. There is no magic number of Bs that will disqualify you…they will simply be weighed against your other qualifications.
