BU vs NYU preparation for MCAT

My daughter is trying to decide between BU and NYU. She intends to study pre-med. The question is: are there any stats as to which school prepares its students better for the MCAT? Are there any numbers on this?

I don’t believe what any university claims regarding med school acceptances. They all play with numbers in the the same way they all pander to US News.

Use your good judgement here, and remember that NYU and BU would be the exact same school were it not for a difference in location.

I guess the question is whether there are any objective, 3rd party sources with these numbers?

That would be great data to have indeed. As I said though, universities and LACs play with the numbers to a large degree. For instance, some universities (not restricted to NYU and BU, of course) won’t officially consider someone a “university-sanctioned” med school applicant unless they have a particular combination of GPA and MCAT score. They simply can’t report on the students who want to apply anyway. They can’t and don’t consider how many dropped out after sophmore year or whatever (not this can be objectively tracked anyway because who knows exactly why!). That is precisely why you see a lot of Liberal Arts schools, among others, who report 80-90% acceptance rates from their schools. They just don’t bother with counting those students who didn’t live up to their particular standards. Long story short is, you can’t believe and won’t find a 3rd party, objective source here…

Both NYU and BU told me that they don’t track such numbers. I don’t really believe that. They passed me from admissions to CAS to Pre-Health specialists and back to admissions without getting anywhere. Thanks for your insight Kiddly.

I don’t know the statistics either, but BU is a great school, especially if you recieved aid. I know that they have a 7 year med program, and that the Biology and Chemistry departments are very good - if fact, so far all of my professors have been amazing.

I could probably answer other questions for you, but I have no idea what the statistics involved are.

Kiddly makes a good point. Such similar schools. Both excellent. Is NYU affiliated with a hospital/health care system the way BU is? My guess is that they are very similar in preparing for med. school and she will do well at either. Of course the real measure will be the effort the students puts in no matter where they go to school.

That’s a good summation of undergrad life at NYU. Daughter is really going to have to be her own advocate, because there will definitely be no handholding or warm fuzzies at NYU.

they really don’t give you a lot of info on their pre-health programs

http://www.nyu.edu/cas/prehealth/

You’ll get a good education there or any other school as dogs said if your willing to put in the effort.

Does D have a preference of one over the other? Is money going to be a factor-NYU is stingy when it comes to aid.

If you’re just concerned about MCAT preparation, it makes no difference. It’s like asking which high school prepares you better for the SAT. Just like the SAT, you can take prep courses, read the review books, etc.
