BU vs UofT vs UW: Seattle for an Undecided Major

Cost is not an issue for any of these schools. I got into the College of Arts and Sciences for all three schools. For UofT I was accepted into their Humanities faculty, and UW I was admitted as a social sciences pre-major. However, I am very much undecided and want to be able to easily explore my options before declaring a major, and be able to switch my major with ease. I am interested in trying some business classes, as well as econ or data science as well. I am from the US so I would be an international student at UofT.

I am looking for a college that will push me academically, has a strong campus community with lots of opportunities, to feel like I belong there, has lots of things to do on and off-campus, and weather isn’t a huge deciding factor for me.

As of right now, I am leaning towards BU because of their academic flexibility, support as well as all of the great things that I have heard about them. I also love the city of Boston and would like living there. However, I haven’t really liked what I’ve seen of the dorms however I do like the campus.

With UofT, I have a good vibe of the people in my class that I’ve met so far, and I love the images of the campus that I have seen. However, I’m unsure that I’ll have the same flexibility as I have at BU, as well as academic support. Additionally, I don’t know how I feel about their school calendar because unlike American universities I would only have a long summer break, and no breaks in the middle of the semesters.

With UW, I don’t know as much about it as I do the other two schools, except I have a really positive impression of it. I’ve heard that there is a community for everyone there which is something that greatly appeals to me. However, I have heard that their majors are competitive which I fear would make things harder for me as I don’t know what I want to major in. Additionally, since it is such a big school I’m worried about the lack of academic support and guidance I will receive.

That defines all.

Lots of kids don’t like dorms. Funny mine chose his for the dorms but then was gone in one year. Boston is pricey but that may be an issue. Or not off campus.

BU is so different campus wise - if that’s what you like - go there.

Can’t speak to Toronto.

UW is more traditional, a few miles out of downtown. It doesn’t have BU’s immediate action.

Good luck

Your rationale for BU makes sense. It is likely the school, out of these three, that makes it easiest to explore and pivot among your areas of interest.

At UW, you can theoretically minor in high-demand subjects like business and informatics, even if you can’t access those majors. But getting into the necessary intro classes can be a struggle.

Of course, that’s not to say that you’ll be able to get every class you want at BU. But the competition for resources isn’t as intense.

I can’t really speak to Toronto, other than that it’s large and you’d have to be relatively self-directed. You sound as if you might prefer to have more support and guidance than you’d get at a large Canadian U.

If the cost of BU isn’t prohibitive, I’d cosign your reasoning that it’s probably the best option.
