So which is better, the BME program at WPI or the one in Boston University? All I know is that the program at WPI is gaining a lot of momentum and is a fast rising field.

BU gets a ton of money for BME research. More than WPI gets in total engineering research funding. That doesn’t mean WPI is not as good but it shows that BU’s is on a different scale. I posted the links to the ASEE research expenditure reports in another thread.

Ah, yes you have. Thanks. But then what does more money mean? That research is more cutting-edge or what?

More money means more research, more professors, more grad students, more work and activity. It usually means more cutting edge research. It means more of a commitment by the institution to that field, meaning more resources. It usually then means that the program is better connected to what is going on in the commercial field, which means jobs and contacts.

Although BU has more research money, WPI is extremely well known for their job placement because of the way they teach. BU teaches in “traditional engineering” way while WPI is project based. Besides WPI is teamed up with MIT to do their researches and as far as I know a lot of the WPI’s research is based on MIT’s fund. While about 70% BU engineering graduate get job, about 92% WPI graduate get jobs (although some people think the data about job placement is biased). But overall it’s your call. Good luck.
