My D is an undecided major 2018 who is trying to make a decision among these three. She will be a member of the golf team and among her major considerations are engineering / pre-engineering. Gettysburg is 27k; U of the South 33; Bucknell is 50 with some scholarship at all three schools. She is not interested at this time in Greek and is not a party type person. Any thoughts?

Bucknell is VERY big into the Greek scene, Gettysburg is pretty big as well. I don’t know about U of the South but both Bucknell and Gettysburg’s social scenes are dominated by Greek life. She may be able to avoid some of the pressures of Greek life depending on whether her golf teammates are involved or not. Best of luck to you!

We eliminated Gettysburg and Bucknell from my D’s list early on because of the large Greek presence. We also visited Sewanee, which was beautiful, but not her cup of tea. All things being equal, Gettysburg would be the obvious choice at 27k.

D1 sports and engineering is a very tough combo. D tried it, lasted one semester. She finishes her “off season” next week. 5 six am workouts, 3 afternoon workouts, weekend tourneys. In season is harder. Although a school decision, she can’t go greek as an athlete, can’t drink 24 hrs prior to a practice, can’t drink 48 hours prior to a game. 2nd violation they lose their scholarship. As a parent I love it, as a student it is a bit draconian.
G’burg does not have engineering (3/2 options). Bucknell has a well known engineering dept.

1 I’d go Bucknell Engineering, skip golf. #2 Gettysburg golf, skip engineering (D3 much, much more relaxed).

you can PM me about Patriot League athletics or any G’burg questions.

Thanks everyone for the response! I think that she is down to Bucknell and U of the S. Have a day!

I think that the engineering option at Sewanee is very similar to that of Gettysburg. Only Bucknell has the regular old 4 year engineering program on site. How you can do golf on a 3/2 basis those last two years, I don’t know.

Hello @dukemd!

Greek life is very big, but I would say it is by no means defining. Many students are not members of the Greek community and they love the endless opportunities the school provides every day. One can choose not to drink or not to go Greek and still have a busy and rewarding social life here. We have programing practically every day of the week that you can not only participate in but also became leader of and help plan, if you like. If you are interested in going Greek, however, do not feel you won’t fit in. Our societies all have diverse populations of men and women of different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, sexual orientation and religious identities. Plus, since students cannot rush until fall of sophomore year, everyone has a chance to make friends and adjust to college life without that pressure as well as a chance to view an entire year of Greek activities outside of any organization.

Just FYI!

My D choose not to join a sorority. She had an active social life and did not lack of friendship! Haha.

I think Bucknell has a national reputation as a very selective school with top rated majors. Do the other schools have the same? Alumni open doors. That is important.
