Budget for kitchen renovation?

How much should you expect to spend to renovate an old kitchen with new cabinets, appliances, new floor but no structural change? I am sure it varies widely. Just to get a rough idea if you would share your experience.

In my area, about $35,000 if you stick with moderately priced cabinets, appliances, etc.

My kitchen was done at the same time we broke down the back wall and added a family room but we kept the footprint of the kitchen though the whole thing was completely gutted. Kitchen is still small in size and it cost between $45K-50K (about half of which was labor.)

I’m doing a kitchen now, but it has structural changes. Ka-ching.

It also depends on how many linear feet you need in cabinets.

Thank you for feedback. It’s about 27’ on one side and about 20’ on the other side. It is a galley shape. Last time we did it.

We gutted our old kitchen ten years ago (my, how time does fly).
Kept the existing outer walls but reworked the appliance locations, new hardwood floors, many Woodmode middle grade maple cabinets, granite counters, midrange Kitchenaid appliances. It was 42K including all labor. We live in NJ where most everything is more expensive than other states it seems.

We have our original cabinets ( from 1901) but H made new doors. If your cabinets are well built you dont have to remove them if you arent knocking down walls.

Around here, a kitchen that size? I can’t imagine doing it for less than $50,000. But so much depends on materials. Are you getting a Kenmore DW (I love mine) or a Bosch which will cost you twice as much? Do you need granite counters? Hardwood floor? Custom cabinets?

Funny, mathmom…the Kenmore Elite dishwasher and the Bosch on sale were the same price.

We only had counters, sink, faucet, dishwasher and fridge replaced and it cost almost $9000.

Cabinets:$20-30K for custom, $6K for Ikea, $10K for Ikea boxes + custom doors
Appliances: $5-15K
Floor: $3-5K
Counters: $600 for DIY butcherblock, $1000 for DIY laminate, $3-4000 for quartz or prefab granite, $4-8000 for granite or marble
Tile backsplash: $1000-3000
Plumbing: $1-2000
Electrical: $1-2000, depending on whether you need to bring anything up to current code, LED vs fluorescent
Painting: $2-3000

You can do a lot yourself, purchase scratch & dent appliances, assemble your own cabinets ([Scherr’s Cabinet and Doors](http://www.scherrs.com/), [Barker Cabinets (RTA)](http://www.barkercabinets.com/), [IKEA Kitchens](<a href=“Kitchens & Appliances - Shop Kitchen Supplies Store - IKEA”>Kitchens & Appliances - Shop Kitchen Supplies Store - IKEA)), put down your own floor, tile your backsplash or just have it painted, etc.

In our recent remodel we saved over $10,000 on cabinets by using a combination of Sherr’s and Ikea boxes + custom doors.

I bought fairly high end SS appliances (Bosch dishwasher & range, Maytag frig and my SS sink) but was able to get the contractor’s discount for all of them. The glass tile back splash I picked would have been unaffordable without the contractor’s discount also.

Cabinets were Armstrong semi custom natural maple to the ceiling. I put in several large drawers instead of bottom cabinets. Counter I did in granite and floor is per-finished hardwood. Since I was opening into a new addition I had to save somewhere and the pre-finished were much less than unfinished.

I found a web site that said the average price of a kitchen remodel is $27K. But average prices can go as high as $43K depending on the part of the country where you live.

Our home is 15 years old. I’d like to get granite countertops, and replace the sink, appliances, and flooring.

Our local places( we just painted our house last year), will also give do it yourselfers a contractors discount. Sometimes you don’t even have to ask.
Since housing is so tight in this area, many families are using family & friends where they can, to do renovations, and the local shops compete for their business.

We also were able to afford much nicer paint this way.

We are in the process of getting remodeling quotes for our smallish kitchen. I am amazed at how much it costs! Our house is not a showplace, so I am not about to sink $50k into a new kitchen … but I want a nice update. Fortunately, there are a couple places in our area that will deal with those who don’t want/need high-end. Still, it is going to be painful to part with my money. :)

Thank you. It is all very helpful. thumper, I like your price. I had a chance to talk to a contractor this afternoon. He is saying a high 5 figure. Is that normal?

mathmom, vballmom, thank you for the links. It looks like cabinets alone will cost about 30K. I have a mild case of arthritis. A little hard to work with my hands.

We had ours done about year and half ago. New maple cabinets, granite counter tops, stainless steel applicances, redid some electrical outlets and lighting. We did not have to redo the floor. It cost about $23,000. we have a small kitchen though. The prices on cabinets varies a lot. We ended up at a place that all they do is install kitchen cabinets. another place that did only granite counter tops , then hired a tile guy for the backspash, electrican for electrical and got the appliances from lowes.Whew! I don’t want to do that again for a while.

having drawers on the bottom for pans is wonderful.

Iglooo, we didn’t replace cabinets, or floors, or lighting fixtures. We didn’t even paint the walls. This summer, we are getting the indoors painted (about $6000 but that is the whole house), and the wood floors sanded and finished (another $6000).

Good thing I like the cabinets!

Don’t skimp! We did our kitchen for about $9,000. That was sanding/painting existing cabinets, new floor, laminate countertop, tile backsplash, sink and new appliances. We WISH that we had paid the extra and had at least gotten granite countertops. Our cabinets look really nice with the new hardware so that turned out okay but it was a lot of work.

After getting master bath reno quotes ranging from $20k to $50k for an 8x10 bath (and we aren’t changing the footprint or knocking out walls), I would assume a kitchen in our area would start at $35k and go up from there. Our current kitchen is L-shaped, about 225 sq. ft., though if we were to renovate, I’d want to knock out a wall and cut into what is currently the living room/dining room. My biggest concern would be that we don’t over-improve for the neighborhood. Dropping big bucks on a kitchen in this house would not make sense.

My sister and BIL redid their kitchen for about $12k with high-end finishes, but they put in lots of sweat equity and traded off labor with others for installations, etc. My sister does tiling/backsplashes and is terrific at it.

I agree about the drawers. I kept the same footprint, but opted for more drawers this go round and it was definitely one of my smarter decisions. My only oops was that I got a gorgeous farmhouse sink and the plumber had to take up more under-counter room for the pipes. He said if the contractor had told him about the sink early on, he could have embedded some of the pipes in the wall. Now I only have room for a very small trash can which is fine for just me. There is a lazy susan cabinet next to the sink that could be converted to a recycling/trash type cabinet by removing the shelf in the middle when the house is sold, so I don’t agonize too much about it.
