Budget Petition with a laptop purchase...when to do this?

I am going to buy a laptop and I plan to submit the petition for budget increase. I am going to be a freshman and a Regents’ Scholar this fall.

If I petition, it will increase my total need by the exact amount of the laptop. Now my questions are:

Is it for sure going to be “accepted”? Is there any reason for a budget petition to be denied?

Since the petition increases my need, and Regents scholarship specifically stated that it will cover all uncovered need with grant money, does this mean that my increase in budget will be fully covered with grants INSTEAD of the Direct Loans that the petition form says it will give?

And can I petition this summer, summer before my first quarter at ucla? I mean, I am buying the laptop for college…so it is eligible for petition if I purchase it now, right? When’s the earliest I can submit my petition or purchase my laptop? (Cuz on the petition form it says purchases have to be made during my “enrollment period” at ucla…)
----when does the enrollment period begin?

Thanks guys- just desperate because I am so stressed about financial aspects of college =[

Does anyone know if I can petition now- or like, right after my enrollment appointment- and have the laptop be eligible to be petitioned?

I mean, it IS the summer before school and I WILL buy it FOR college, you know?

Or do I have to wait until classes start?

I looked this up for you and the way the language on the form is written I would assume you have to wait. However, this is a great question to ask at your orientation, if you didn’t already have it.

You can try calling the Orientation dept, as well as the Financial Aid and/or Student Loans dept on Monday. One of those departments should have an answer for you.

if youre receiving the full 31,000 amount then you have more than enough as a freshmen to purchase a laptop. so the answer to your question is no

1.It’s for sure going to be accepted if you followed on directions and read the eligibility guidelines.
2. It will increase your non-need based aid, so you will only receive additional loans. if you have unaccepted loan assistance, it means you’ll be denied and ur other loans will be reoffered ot you.
3. you must make the purchase sometime in the fall quarter to be eligible for a budget increase, since every student has a budget, which the financial aid office meets (either with loans or grants). You can petition if you take all of the grants and loans (and still need more financial aid). In your case, this is the laptop (which you must prove that you bought in the academic year of 2011-2012.

Hey thanks for the replies guys… I actually received not-so-good financial aid but due to family crises, my parents’ income drastically fell this year and much of our asset had to be used for a surgery. Well, anyway, they didn’t look much at our PYI petition so I am turning to the budget petition as my last resort.

I wish to petition and try to get loans- the thing is, I may be receiving an outside scholarship late august/ early september (sch’p organization said the check will be mailed first day of sept) but the results aren’t finalized yet. It’s going to be around $2000 and I thought it would be good to have this money cover for the loan I would get from teh budget petition.

My worry now is that if the sch’p (unsure) check gets to FAO earlier than my budget petition (since…laptop must be bought DURING the quarter, not even in early sept?) then they will decrease my grant amount since I got no loans in my initial efan. THAT i do not want. I want to have my budget petition passed first and then they can replace the loan with the potential sch’p check and it will all end favorably for me.

Anyway, this is my situation. Therefore, I was hoping that I could buy the laptop and petition like, late august? to fit the timing for the check. Any more comments?
