Hi! I’m Ellie, and I’m kind of brand new to College Confidential…this is my first post! Yay! Anyways, I’ve been really building up my book for auditions, but I’m having trouble with some of the categories of song; specifically Country, Rock, Golden Age, and Comedic. I realize this is a wide question, but if anyone has any suggestions at all, let 'em fly! I’ll take any help I can get! (; And here’s a little background info on me: I’m 16, a short, brunette, and I’m a belter. I have a nice middle voice, but the high soprano, ingenue-type songs are not for me! Think: “Spark of Creation” or “The Life I Never Led.”

Thanks an advance!! (:

Hi Ellie – Wow, your question really is too broad – there could be books written attempting to answer! I thought I would give you few ideas to get you started. You seem to have the contemporary musicals covered – right? So, here goes a few ideas. Country – so broad – but I would try to go with something with a bit of twang – you cannot go wrong with anything from Patsy Cline. Rock – also really broad – have you seen ROCK OF AGES? – I wonder can you sing Janis Joplin or Gracie Slick without hurting you voice? Comedic – Always True to You from KISS ME KATE, I Cain’t Say No from OKLAHOMA, Adelaide’s Lament from GUYS & DOLLS, That’ll Show Him from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (might be a bit high), I Can Cook Too from ON THE TOWN. Classic Broadway – well, anything from 1940 – 1966 – so many possibilities – some suggestions – Whatever Lola Wants from Damn Yankees, Anything Goes from ANYTHING GOES, Everything’s Coming Up Roses from GYPSY, If He Walked Into My Life from MAME – this is too broad!! There is a book, Broadway Belters Songbook by Hal Leonard you might want buy. Two things I wonder – do you dance? Do you “belt” safely? Hope this helps a bit – good luck.
