Burglary @ poplar hall

<p>So surprised that there’s already a burglary incident in poplar hall…and the students were home! good thing no one was hurt…</p>

<p>This message is being sent to all faculty, staff and Seattle campus students with the approval of the UW Police Department. This message is being sent in the interest of public safety and in compliance with federal law requiring timely warning notification of crimes committed on or near campus.</p>

<p>Notification of a Criminal Incident - Seattle Campus </p>

<p>August 27, 2011*-</p>

<p>Residential Burglary – Poplar Residence Hall</p>

<p>On Saturday, August 27, 2011, at approximately 4:46 PM UW Police received a call from a resident in Poplar Hall indicating a lone male suspect crawled through an open bedroom window into their occupied apartment. The residents were in another room at the time, heard the noise in the bedroom, looked down the hall to see a male walking towards them and called to the man. The male suspect ran back into the bedroom and climbed back out the window. The residents saw the male get onto an unknown colored mountain bike and flee dow9n the alley from the area. The residents were unharmed, and the suspect was interrupted prior to taking anything. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect however he was not located.</p>

<p>The suspect is described as thin white male, 30-40 years old, long light brown to blonde colored hair, wearing a green shirt and jeans. The residents described him as “scruffy” He was also carrying two grocery bags, one of which was a Trader Joes recycled bag, yellow and blue in color with a design printed on it. The second bag was a Safeway grocery bag. There is no further description on the bicycle used by the suspect.</p>

<p>This case is being investigated by the University of Washington Police Department under case number 11-001685.</p>

<p>If you suspect criminal activity, some helpful information to pass on to the police:</p>

<p>· Clothing descriptors– look for layers under the visible layer, other distinctive design identifiers, etc.</p>

<p>· Physical characteristics – height, weight, eyes, hair, mannerisms, scars/tattoos</p>

<p>· Direction of travel (by foot or automobile)</p>

<p>· Suspect vehicle description, including license plate</p>

<p>· Weapons involved</p>

<p>I’m pretty sure the Orientation leaders really go over this during orientation…
but common crime is crime of opportunity. Keep windows, doors locked, unless you’re right next to the window … don’t leave your dorm rooms unlocked, laptops are easily stolen that way. Don’t fall asleep in Ode and think that nobody will rummage through your stuff.</p>
