Yeah, Burlington IS expensive. The only time we’ve gotten deals was when the college blocked off rooms for move in and I think, family weekend. Speaking of which, if your daughter does decide on Burlington, book move-in weekend ASAP.

Key things to remember though is that there are several hotels in SOUTH Burlington that don’t show up if you just search for Burlington.

True about South Burlington. Some South Burlington places on Williston Rd would be closer to UVM than some Burlington addresses.

Reality check–this is the earliest spring I can remember in over 30 years of living here. Last year, we had 5 feet of snow on the ground at this point. So students need to be ok with winter to thrive here. Most come to love it.

mom60 … let us know how the BTV visit goes!

Now, does anyone have any tips on good places to stay in Canton, NY? St. Lawrence is where I’ll be heading next month. I’ll be surprised if it’s as expensive as BTV.

I’m still waiting for you to tell us from your other thread where you’ll be vacationing! :)

Mom60:

Another thought:

I know you’ve already booked rooms, but to cut down on expense, you may have chosen a hotel in the next town away…when we went on college searches, we stayed within 10 minutes of the colleges and our rooms were always less expensive than in the college town themselves. Just some food for thought for the future.

I could probably have saved some money booking them outside of Burlington. I took into consideration that Burlington was a place that might be worth being in walking distance of downtown and the lake and that it is a first visit to the area. If D ends up at UVM I would definitely look at finding something less expensive.
I took my own location into consideration when making the decision. If you came to visit UCSB you could stay in Goleta or uptown Santa Barbara and be closer to the school and save a lot of money but it would not be the same experience as staying in SB down near the waterfront. If you are from Ca it isn’t a big deal but if you are from another state I think it is worth the extra expense of being in the more visually appealing area.
Regarding the weather- She said she is over so many people asking her if she knows it gets really cold in Vermont. My wimpy older kid adjusted to a midwest winter and this kid is much hardier.

chocchipcookie, I’m waiting too! Between waiting on a few quotes for various home repairs and upgrades, and the airlines not posting prices that far out, no decisions have been made yet. I still want to sneak away to Cuba via Canada … will work on that tomorrow while my D is home from college one last morning and my H is feeling soft. S will go anywhere, so he’s easy.

SnowflakeVT- last year when I was trying to plan a winter vacation I found out it was extremely difficult to make everyone happy. Like you I have a S who will go anywhere. D’s not so easy. Each time I thought I had a great plan I would mention it to one of my D’s or my H and I would get a negative opinion. I realized that I should have just planned it and told them where and when.
Also looks like neither my D nor your S will end up in Montana.

Yes, there are cheap places in South Burlington, and even cheaper through Priceline. The places are great for our visits to D1. But I would LOVE to stay at one of the places in downtown, where we could stroll back along Church Street after dinner. I love downtown and the lake area, and I think if you want your family to have a great impression of Burlington, you’ve made a good choice, compromising on price for location. Hope the visit goes well!

H reports the Courtyard is very nice. He said he would rather be there with me. My D can be a prickly travel companion. Yesterday they visited the Ben and Jerry’s factory. Today is stuff at the school. I got a photo texted to me of D with a milk shake with cotton candy on the top. H reports that the countryside of Vermont is beautiful. I suggested the Farm House but H says D did not like the menu. Did I say she is a difficult traveler!

UVM and Burlington is night and day from the school they just came from. Both have pros and cons. I am trying hard to not ask if she has made any important decisions.

That’s too bad. H and I ate there last summer when we stayed in Burlington and it was great! They serve all fresh, locally grown foods. H is a beer connoisseur and he raved about their selections. Heck, the root beer was even locally made by our waitress’ family and was excellent.

Your D was a ‘prickly’ travel companion … ha ha, your poor H with a teenager. That’s sweet that he wanted you there. She probably wanted to be there without her dad so she could fit it with the college crowd. I hope she un-prickled enough to enjoy some bonding time with her dad. Keep us posted … this is a nice, uplifting story compared to what I could be reading about on CNN.com over my morning coffee. :)
