Burlington vermont

H and D are headed to visit UVM next week. What would be a good location for them to stay? This will be there first visit to the state of Vermont.

Hi Mom60:

You may want to PM Kathiep, her S goes to Champlain in Burlington. The downtown area is fun to stroll around in. They are known for their flatbread pizzas and the Lake Champlain chocolates! Make sure H brings you home some chocolate and hope it doesn’t melt! :)

I live near Burlington. If they have a car, any place they stay in Burlington or South Burlington would be a quick drive to UVM. Burlington is a wonderful college town and the campus is very pretty. Every student I know who has gone there has been happy. My son wouldn’t consider it (too close to home) but it is a great school. Any downtown restaurant would be enjoyable.

Would staying downtown be better? They will have a car.

I always book through Priceline, and get good deals at the Sheraton Conference Center and I think it’s a Holiday Inn, across the street, in South Burlington. They are not in downtown Burlington, but they work for us. There are two nice hotels in downtown Burlington, maybe a Hilton and a Sheraton. They are pricier, but nicer. Also nice not to have to drive.

My family loves to eat at Sweetwater’s, on Church Street. Church Street is so fu, you will really enjoy walking around there.

I’ve stayed at the Hilton on the water. It was nice, and an easy walk to restaurants.

Are there any hotels that are walking distance to the admissions office? We’ll be there in mid-April but I haven’t booked a room yet, we’ll get in early evening so it would be nice to stretch our legs the next morning…I’m taking the easy way out by tagging onto this post instead of doing the research LOL.

The Sheraton is close to campus, but you have to cross an Interstate entrance or exit to get to campus. Across the street might be better. I’ll try to figure out if it’s a Holiday Inn. There are others on that street (Williston Rd. ). There are good crossing lights when you get a little closer. Now I’m thinking you have to cross an Interstate exit/entrance on either side of Williston Rd. I’ll try to check it out.

We’ve stayed at the Hilton on the lake twice and D stayed there when she interviewed at the University of Vermont Medical School. All experiences were good ones! They gave D a good “visiting University of Vermont” room rate. The town is very compact and everything is close.

Another VT person here. Let me suggest that if you’ve never been to Burlington and you want to walk around in the evening, consider staying at the Hilton on Battery Street or the Courtyard on Cherry St. You can walk up to Church Street and also down to the water front. UVM unfortunately is not directly near any hotels except the Sheraton without a good walk, but you can easily take your own car or ask for a taxi and it will be easy enough. Burlington is not a crowded city, so even if you stay at the Holiday in and walk across the interstate, it is not like a big city interstate. When I first moved here (wow, 19 years ago) I did it and it was not a big deal. New York and Boston are so much more risky! Another option is the Bestwestern at the Windjammer Conference Center … great people that run that and there’s a casual sports bar upstairs, and downstairs is a nicer restaurant with a great salad bar.

If you’re downtown, I recommend Leunig’s Bistro on Church Street, or The Farmhouse for great beer and organic burgers. There’s also Flatbread pizza and maybe by the time you get here there will be a new amazing higher end pizza place called Pizzaria Veritas (156 St. Paul St.) that will be opening in April.

Please PM me if you have any questions or if you need any help while you’re here. I hope you love Vermont as much as I do!

p.s. I’m another one with a son that felt UVM was too close to home.

The Clarion Hotel and Conference Center is the one I was thinking of on the other side of the road from Sheraton. Both have decent restaurants. Nearby is Al’s French Fries, a local institution. Downtown on Main St (same as Williston Rd) is Nectors where the band Phish started. They used to be famous for French fries with gravy, but I haven’t been there for many years and it has changed hands.

Hilton is great and a short hike to campus; if they have room try the Willard Street Inn - close to campus and a lovely old fashioned charming Inn. The Farmhouse is great and try their Hill brewery beers - fabulous stuff brewed a couple hours north of Burlington in a small brewery. Best beer ever. Great town, great school. Enjoy!

My husband recently stayed here [Burlington VT Hotels - Green Mountain Suites Burlington VT Hotel](http://www.greenmountainsuites.com/) which is really nice when you have a kid or two in tow. I’ve also stayed at the Hampton Inn near St. Michaels, the Comfort Inn in South Burlington and the Courtyard by Marriott at Burlington Harbor. Did you look on UVM’s website for discounted hotels? They indicate that they have some discounted rates: [Directions and Lodging : Visiting : University of Vermont](<a href=“Undergraduate Admissions”>Undergraduate Admissions) I agree that you won’t really find anything within an easy walking distance - unless you are visiting Champlain- It’s closer to downtown. ;)

Thank you everyone. I will print out a list of dining options for them. I am not going to be the one walking the streets of downtown Burlington. The con of that is that I am not going to get to see what is said to be a wonderful part of the country, pro is that I don’t have to visit with a stressed out senior who is struggling with making her college decision.

mom60, If you haven’t already booked a place, here is one more site to look at: [Airbnb Search](http://www.airbnb.com/search) Bed and breakfast kind of places, without the breakfast.

I second the Hilton. They can park the car and not drive it again until they depart. The Hilton is within easy walkng distance of UVM and is just steps away from Church Street, a pedestrian-only shopping/dning area. They can even get a room with beautiful views of Lake Champlain.

kathiep- Bed and breakfast places are something I sometimes make my H suffer through.
Used some American Express points and booked them at the Courtyard. Burlington is expensive.

Burlington is rather expensive but your D will be staying in a dorm after all, not a hotel and there are affordable food options downtown when she gets sick of campus food. I expect the on-campus food has improved with the new student center.

mom60–my H does not love B and Bs either. wants something more impersonal. I enjoy them but don’t often push it. Pick my battles.

bethievt- On the expense I was surprised at the price of hotel rooms. I know Burlington is a wonderful place that many like to visit. I live in a town that is a popular travel destination so I should not have been surprised about prices.

I wonder if they raise rates when there is high demand. Airlines do that. I suppose hotels do too. Since we live here, though, we don’t usually think of hotel prices. Housing prices are not low, so there you go.
