I know there’s a thread sort of like this one but I still don’t understand anything and am completely lost. Also, how much is tuition at IU and how do I know how much money to borrow? Thanks so much.

That means that, so far, your financial aid covers all your costs and then some. You do not have to pay anything at this time. Later, when board fees are added in, you may have a charge. Since your statement balance is negative, and the payment amount has nothing listed, you do not currently owe anything. (Want to trade bills???)

To answer your questions, tuition for the semester is 3,499.80 for you lucky in-state people. The other items are all additional fees, including room, which I believe is charged by the month. You are borrowing $1750 this semester through the Stafford loan program. The other fees that will come later are board (food service) fees and additional room fees, which are added on each month. You do not need to borrow anything else currently. Whether you will later depends upon whether you can afford to pay room and board.

So is tuition $6,999.60 for the entire year? Are those charges such as Activity Fee, Transportation Fee, Technology Fee, and such that all amount to $4,511.78 part of the tuition? When do I have to pay for that?

My room costs $4,172 and together with the meal plan and activity fee, it would come to $6,800. Does that mean I would be paying $13,799.60 total for the year if I added the tuition to it? Thanks again for your help!

naturefreak, it is something like that; however, your financial aid covers some of that. It looks like you will receive yearly grants of $6000 and yearly Stafford loan of $3500. Tuition and fees would include all those other little things–activity fee, health fee, transportation fee, etc. So add all those up, along with room and board, and you will have the total. However, don’t forget money for books and personal expenses. The total amount you will need will depend upon what classes you take–and how many books are required, plus whether you can get them used–and how thrifty you are in your daily life–whether you eat out a lot, take part in expensive activities, buy a lot of clothes and such, etc.

The tuition, fees, room and board will all be added in to your bursar bill, and you can pay through the OneStart website. This month you have nothing to pay, but next month more of the room and some of the board will be added on, so you will have a bill.

I’m having problems with scholarships coming through. I have $4700 in scholarships that are supposed to be applied. $2,000 from the IU Foundation, and $2700 from a private foundation. The pivate foundation said that they sent out the cash a week ago, and the IU Foundation said they are having technical problems getting things posted on my account.

I have a bit over $4500 due August 10th, and Bursars office said they did not receive any money.

Worst thing that happens is you get a $30 fee to defer the payments to the next month, which in the grand scheme of things is not much at all.

Gosh, I need to apply for those IU Foundation Scholarships tomorrow. That and the Kelley Scholarships, I know people who got money from both sources.

My son’s IU Foundation scholarship wasn’t posted last time I checked either. And I remember his freshman year that outside scholarships didn’t get posted until before the September payment. Since we pay the minimum each month, that just meant we had a big payment in August, but hardly anything in October and November. It all evens out in the end.

IUStudent, you can either pay the minimum now and defer the rest, or you can call the Bursar again Monday and ask what to do. Good luck!

A2Wolves6, the IU scholarships are not open now. I think applications open in either December or January and are due March 1. (Check the site to be sure.)

What happens if I don’t pay the minimum amount? What happens if I don’t pay anything? Its not that I want to be delinquent on the bill, but I’m supposed to have my educations completely paid for by these scholarships, and paying out of my pocket cause IU can’t get their books straight does not seem fair to me.

All the loans and scholarships will be applied to your account by September 10th or so. If they cover at least the minimum payment due as listed, there is no problem. (If you are to have scholarships cover your bill, they will be posted by that date.) Also, for those who have loans they will also post by that date as long as you signed the paperwork on a timely basis.

If they don’t cover the minimum amount, it is my understand that you will get a notice that you need to pay or risk being dropped as a registered student.

Make sure you check with the registrar’s office if there is any question–because they probably don’t give you a lot of leeway with this–I’m guessing just a month or two.

I talked to th bursar’s office becasue there is no way i ca pay my minimum w/ out my scholarships in. But they were saying they would tack on a late fee but that is about it.
