Business and Cosmetology?

I’m interested in being a cosmetologist and also getting a business degree. Is it possible for me to go to college and cosmetology school at the same time? Or should I do one before the other?

It would be difficult to study both full time - especially if the programs are at two different institutions. However, you certainly could study both of them part-time at two different places, or coordinate a program of studies that allows you to pursue both at one place that offers both. For example, the community college where I teach offers a number of cosmetology courses as well as an associates degree in business.

I expect that many students first complete the cosmetology training, and then study business part-time once they have begun to work. Whether that could be a good plan for you would depend on the costs of the two programs, the likely income from cosmetology, and whether it would be easy to fit the business coursework around the hours you need to be working.

If you want to combine both interests, FIT has a business degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing…one of the few (if not only) schools with that major.

What year are you in high school? My friend’s daughter did cosmetology training while a junior and senior in high school. She attended vocational school in the morning for her cosmetology classes and then went to her high school for the afternoon in order to complete her high school class requirements. She’s currently taking her exams for cosmetology. She passed the written exam and will take the other exam soon. If she passes the second exam, she’ll be licensed in our state as a hair stylist by June. She’ll be attending a four year college in the Fall with the intention of studying business. She decided to go to college just in case she changes her mind about being a hair stylist.
