We are starting the college search for our younger son. Requirements: Should be able to get in as a B plus student (don’t know the SAT scores yet), Business major available, single room in a dorm available, walking distance to a nice town (i.e. not in a bad neighborhood, not isolated), able to get to Amtrak or an airport to come home (not buying a car). Preference for East coast. Do not want to pay $50,000. for a private university. Now thinking about Towson University. Any comments and ideas? Thanks so much.

Towson has primarily a good rep, with some concerns about kids heading home on weekends.

Have you done the work to check that the 50K private school will not give enough aid to draw even with a $35k OOS public?

Others to consider are Delaware, Rutgers and, if you are ok with the surrounding area, Temple

Single rooms as a freshman are very rare

Alabama isn’t in the area that you mention but…

Super beautiful campus!!!

has private rooms - my kids have them. Super nice

No car needed. School provides free tram

Safe city

near Amtrak

School also has shuttle service to and from airport.

OOS cost is about $31k per year (includes tuition, private room, food, books, misc expenses.)

Here’s one of the links to the private room dorms (private rooms in 4 room suites that share a kitchenette, lliving room, and 2 bathrooms) Scroll down for floor plans and more pics… http://housing.ua.edu/ridgecrestsouth.cfm
If you don’t want your child in a 4 room suite with private rooms, there are single suites, too.

Beautiful campus, good weather, fun school, super friendly kids.

Don’t let the “south” scare you. Alabama has kids from all 50 states, and many of its “in-state” students are really the children of “transplants” since the state is home to the second largest research park in the nation (Cummings Research Park - home to many high-tech and Fortune 500 companies). The UA profs are from all the top schools - Ivies, Stanford, Berkeley, UMich, UVa, etc. Therefore, the school has more of a cosmopolitan feel.

An out-of-state student recently wrote on this forum… “UA is recruiting for the best and brightest students nationwide. For many students, it is the money that first interests us in Alabama, we visit, and then we get hooked.”

BTW…we’re California natives and both of our kids go there.

Good luck getting a single for a freshman. Your best bet would be to donate a significant amount of money, otherwise, it’s not very likely.
