Business major building a resume.. Better to have major specific internships??

Hello, I am currently going into my sophomore year of college as a MIS major. For the next 2 summers I plan to have internships but I am still deciding what kind of internships I am looking for. Obviously, the easy route would be to get internships related to my major like a data analysis intern or something. However, I have interests outside of my major that I would like to try to get internships in. For example, I am interested in theatre and would consider pursuing a stage management internship. Or I also am interested in something to do with entertainment/TV production and could possibly go that route aiming for an internship at somewhere like NBC if I am lucky.

So my question is, do you think employers are more interested in an applicant who follows the straight and narrow of their major and builds experience in that specific field or would they be more likely to hire someone who has had experiences in different disciplines? I don’t know how well I have explained this but I am hoping that someone could offer advice! Thanks.

In your specific situation an MIS internship would be better if you hope to get an MIS job after graduation.

Since I entered the workforce 45 years ago, I’ve been impressed over and over and over again that what employers want to see in a job candidate is experience in the job they’re advertising and that experience in entirely different areas is regarded as neutral at best.

You should get internships in MIS.

(If you do internships in some field that doesn’t entail management information systems, they should not be at the cost of getting a respectable number of MIS internships. And quite possibly you will be better off not including them in your resume.)
