Is a business major really pointless like everyone is saying right now? I was planning on majoring in business admin or maybe operations management, or any sort of management, but apparently it is difficult to get a job with that degree as no real life applications are taught and learned by students. Is this true, or in reality, is a business major in high demand among employers and will also be in high demand in the future? Thanks!!

I actually have the same question. I’ve heard you don’t learn the creative aspect of business. You only learn the nuts and bolts in college.

Business majors are in very low demand, with the exception of accountants. That said, business administration/management/whatever majors are of very low value. I would really suggest that if you major in business you major in finance or accounting. The reason that these two majors are better than the others is because they deal with quantitative problems. Other majors like biz admin and marketing deal with the soft side of business, and generally include less numbers, making them more liberal artsy. It is unlikely that the demand for biz majors will increase in the near future. Furthermore, I would suggest that unless you go to a top b-school, you major in accounting or you don’t major in business at all.

Finance (at top business programs) and Accounting are still solid industries with good employment prospects. Although it’s becoming increasingly advisable for biz-majors to pick up a double major/minor in ArtSci.

How about operations?

Low value. I agree with what askjeeves said, finance (at top programs) and accounting are really the only two good options.

Wait operations is low value also? Usually people say that finance, accounting, and operations are all good because they actually teach people real life stuff and applications.

Does the major have the word “Management” in it? If so, it is likely of low value. If you think that people say operations is a good major then why did you ask your question in the first place?

Haha I knew that was going to be brought up when I posted that reply. I guess I just wanted assurance, mainly because thats just what a couple sources said. Well, there is operations research and operations management.
