I’m planning to get into to hotels after college and by that I mean owning them rather than managing or working in a single hotel. I would like to eventually own a lot of hotels around the country and possibly the world. Doing this, I feel I need to have a business degree but then I also feel I should specialize in hotels in college by going to Cornell or NYU’s hotel program. The only problem is I feel like I wouldn’t be learning enough about running a company owning hotels if I specialize in hotels but then I feel like if I do business, I won’t know enough about how hotels are run in order to pick and buy good hotels in the future. Basically what I’m asking, Will specializing in hotels give me the tools necessary to own many hotels under a company or will I only learn basic hotel principles and not be able to run a company efficiently?

If you really aspire to own hotels, then this is a no brainer. Go to Cornell’s hotel school. Undergraduate business programs prepare students for a career in business but don’t necessarily teach them how to run a business. In the future, you can go back for your MBA if you deem it necessary at that time.

BTW, the Hotel school offers the same courses as an undergraduate business program, with many of them geared specifically towards the hospitality industry.

Thanks for the info. The links helped alot

no one person “owns” a hotel. Unless you have about 500 million -10 billion dollars in your bank i doubt you can own or buy a hotel by yourself. typically if you want to open up your own hotel, you will need investors. If you want to manage a small inn, that is a different story. The best way to learn about opening businesses is to get a mentor. Find people who have succeeded in starting their own business and transfer those skills to hospitality. Even before then, i would recommend you work for a hotel you can imagine yourself “owning” in the future and move up to general manager. that will expose you to a lot of different operations in the hotel and with those experiences, you can then convince investors to give you money, build capital, capital ventures, ect ect and so on and so forth
