D has been accepted to Clemson, UTK, South Carolina, Auburn, Ohio State, TCU, Miami Ohio, IU Kelly
All direct admit business. Deferred from top 2 unfortunately
Any advice on these schools?
Congrats on the acceptances!
-Are all comfortably affordable (no hardship, no or minimal debt)?
-Does she prefer the vibe, size, location, etc. of any campus?
-Does she know what area of business she wants to study?
All of the schools are in our budget. We got a lot of merit at some of them. We are not so familiar with the business aspect as we are in the medical field. No honors at this point.
The vibe at most of them is big state school. I think general finance to start until D wants to specialize
For finance I’d say IU Kelley has the biggest reputation. That said, it is important that D feels the school is a good fit.
Decision will heavily depend on career goals. For example, if the end goal is accounting ie. audit or tax, the Big 4 (EY, Deloitte etc.) hire from almost all SEC/Big 10 schools and other state flagships. So the decision comes down to culture and fit. (Have to note that IU forms the largest chunk of fresh hires for all the Big 4, of any school in America.)
If however the end goal is Finance, in particular Investment Banking (IB) or Wealth Management (IM), or Management Consulting, then name brand will carry the heaviest weight;
You can be a 4.0 honors, student body president at a “non-target school”, and still have zero shot at Goldman Sachs or McKinsey, who will pass you over for a painfully average student at a “target school”.
Of the options listed, IU Kelley is the only one close to being a target for these roles.
OP stated D is looking at a finance major in an earlier post – that was the basis for my comment. Again, fit is important as well.
Yep! Did not mean to reply to your comment in particular (must have been a fat finger since I’m on mobile)
If operations or supply chain, all fine but UTK most reputed. Intl business South Carolina most reputed. Finance, if investment, IU and maybe Ohio State and S Carolina. If not investment (finance), no matter. And all do place, just some better than others.
All very solid but not all the same. Weather, environment (bigger city vs small city vs small town), campus sizes. Even b school sizes - IU is huge, 10k plus undergrads in Kelley. Miami feels like an LAC whereas the others like big state schools. Some - Ohio State specifically and to a lesser extent So Carolina are ‘flyable’ if that’s a consideration.
Many are close enough to one another - like IU, Ohio State, Miami - etc that you should get out to visit.
Most business roles - all very solid - congrats.
This is not true. Painfully average students at target schools get hired at insurance companies, credit card, commercial banks, airlines, retailers- all of which offer fine career paths and most of which offer fantastic training and advancement opportunities.
But they do not get hired at Goldman or BCG/Bain/McKinsey. They do not even get interviewed. They are screened out at the beginning of the process.
Curious why you would post something which is absolutely false?
