Business vs Econ

is it true that a business major is less likely to get you into an MBA program than an Econ program? If so, why? Are there any other marketable majors besides Econ leading toward an MBA?

Bumping this

Your thinking is flawed. Econ is ONE major while when you say business you are talking about Accounting, Finance, Marketing, MIS, etc.

If you google top MBA program class profiles you will see that most have higher representation of business majors than Econ majors but most of them group business together and have Econ separate. Some group Econ with social sciences.

So…if your question is “Do the Econ majors outnumber half dozen or so business majors?”, than the answer is no.

^It depends on where are you applying to. For instance, look at this class profiles, and you will see that business majors are outnumbered:

http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/student-life/class-profile.cfm

[Stanford MBA Program](MBA Entering Class Profile | Stanford Graduate School of Business)

On the other hand, here business majors are at the top:

[Class Profile, Full-Time MBA Program - Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley](<a href=“Full-Time MBA Program | Berkeley Haas”>Full-Time MBA Program | Berkeley Haas)

^^Which is why I said most.

Booth, Harvard (equal), Duke, Ross, and Haas are the Businessweek top 10 programs (that separate Econ from Social sciences) which Business majors outnumber/equal econ majors.

I can’t be sure, but I am fairly certain that as you go down the rankings the number of schools in which business majors outnumber econ majors increases (in the t25 schools).

Also, you must consider that the schools that DON’T separate econ/social sciences (some of which you listed) most likely the business majors outnumber the econ majors.

Overall, it goes Engineering majors>Business Majors>Econ Majors.

thank you, does it matter where you get your UG whille trying to apply for an MBA? or is it all based on your GMAT scores?

GMAT is secondary to your work experience.
